July 20th
Army Sgt. 1st Class Wyatt A. Goldsmith, a resident of Colville, passed away at Camp Bastion Hospital, Afghanistan, on July 15, 2011 while serving his country as a Special Force combat medic in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. Wyatt was born on Sept. 21, 1982 in Redmond, the son of John W. and Lorie L. (Torgerson) Goldsmith.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection broke ground officially last week on its new multi-million-dollar U.S. Border Patrol station in Colville. The station is located just off Buena Vista Road near the northwest Colville city limits. The new “state of the art” secure facility meets eco-friendly LEED component certification and will be “strategically located on Highway 395 between Kettle Falls and Colville,” according to David D. Smith, Senior Patrol Agent, Public Information Office, U.S. Border Patrol in Spokane.

In a four to three roll call vote at last Tuesday’s meeting, the Colville City Council opted to put an advisory ballot item in the November General Election concerning the relocated airport project. The measure will ask Colville citizens whether or not they think the City of Colville should proceed with a site selection process for a regional airport. There are certain stipulations though:
The vote will only be advisory, meaning the decision to continue with the airport site selection process ultimately rests on the shoulders of Colville City Council.
Staff Sergeant Wyatt A. Goldsmith, 28, of Colville, died July 15 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered after enemy forces attacked his unit.
He is survived by his parents, John and Lorie Goldsmith of Colville, and by his sister, Nicole.
Goldsmith was assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-
Afghanistan.
This was Goldsmith's third deployment in support of Overseas Contingency Operations, according to the U.S. Department of Defense website.

Sharon May (Morgan) Fesler passed away June 28,2011 in Franklin, Indiana at the age of 65. Sharon was born on May 4, 1946 to John and Mary Morgan in Franklin, IN.
Sharon loved to travel all over the United States. She could never live in one place to long.
When she was put into the nursing home in 2007, she lived there only until 2010. Then she had the nursing home move her to a different nursing home, just because she had to move and couldn't stand to live in one spot too long.
Reed Bryan Friedman was released from his suffering on July 10, 2011. He passed away from complications resulting from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
Reed was born Nov. 30, 1953, in Los Angeles, CA, to George and Janice Coon Reed Friedman.
He is survived by his loving siblings, Diane Friedman, Colville; Malcolm Friedman and wife Jill, Colville; Joyce Woodard and husband Greg, Colbert; and Georgeann Peck and husband Dan, Spokane.
Colville High School senior-to-be Liselotte Doggen, who teamed with fellow CHS senior Erin Little to lead the Indians to a State 1A tennis tournament appearance and the medal stand this spring in Yakima, is organizing a local tennis tournament as part of her Senior Project. In addition to being her Senior Project, the tournament will also serve a dual function as a fund-raiser to help the resurfacing and retooling of the dilapidated tennis courts at Colville City Park. That project has been underwritten by the Colville Valley Tennis Association.
A rare hole in one on the 321-yard par 4 12th hole during Sunday’s Scramble round of the 2011 Chataqua Best Ball & Scramble Golf Tournament at Chewelah Golf & Country Club was the difference-maker for the Chewelah team of Brenton Harting and Brett Sweet.
Propelled by Harting’s ace, the duo fired a two-day total of 131 to capture the gross division in the championship flight.
Harting’s hole in one on the challenging par 4 was the highlight of the tournament, which featured 98 two-man teams.

Travis Bonnett is a man of practicality. It’s that realism that served as the impetus for the 24-year-old Onion Creek resident to mount an engine on the 26-inch Schwinn bicycle that he bought from Wal-Mart in order to save money on gasoline.
Yes, that’s right. After watching a “how to” video on Youtube, Bonnett thought, “Why not me?” He ordered an engine kit from www.gasbike.net, complete with a half-gallon gas tank, that he installed on the frame of his bike.
“My friends were skeptical at first,” Bonnett says. “But honestly, it wasn’t very hard to do.”
July 7th
Deserae Kathleen (Austin) Martinez, a life-long resident of the Colville area, was accepted into the Lord’s hands on June 26, 2011. She was born in Spokane on July 29, 1982 to Cathy Somerlott and Don Willard. She married Josh Martinez on Sept. 23, 2006. Desi graduated from Colville High School in 2001, and recently completed the Spokane Carrington College Dental Assistant program. She was employed by Whitty’s Chevron. Desi enjoyed horseback riding, gardening and helping people.
