July 7th
Berneice Iona Worth, a former resident of Kettle Falls, passed away on June 28, 2011 in Spokane at the age of 84. She was born on July 14, 1926 in Beiseker, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Meckler) Fleck.
Jeffrey G. Fisher, a resident of Spokane, passed away on June 23, 2011 in Spokane at the age of 26. He was born on Dec. 18, 1984 in Spokane, the son of Thomas Wayne and Fisher and Lori Denise Munson.
Shrinking availability of state and federal grants means that Stevens County likely wonât be taking on any major transportation improvement projects over the next six years, according to Stevens County Public Works Director, Jim Whitbread. Instead, the county will be focusing on maintenance and projects it can do itself, as outlined in the countyâs new Six-Year Transportation plan.
Whitbread said this approach is an effort to be fiscally prudent until grant monies again become available.
The Panorama Juniors U-17 club volleyball season came to an end last week in Phoenix, AZ. The team, comprised of members of the Colville High volleyball team, competed in the 28th annual volleyball festival in the desert. The tournament is the nationâs largest indoor girlâs volleyball event. During opening ceremonies at Chase Field (home of the Arizona Diamondbacks), the Panorama Juniors marched with over 500 teams and 8,000 athletes in all divisions. Honored during opening ceremonies were volleyball greats Misty May-Treanor and Karch Kiraly.
It has been decades since Colville High alumni (and a few friends) strapped on the helmets and laced on the pads for a little high school football dĂ©jĂ vu. But with the encouragement of CHS grad Cole Weatherman and support from the Colville School District administration, a Colville vs. Chewelah alumni football game was resurrectedâand playedâlast Friday night at CHS. No, it almost didnât happen. There was a point last week when Weatherman thought the game was going to have to be cancelled.
July 5th
Greg and Jeremiah Rainer (far left in picture) lead a crew of volunteers in pouring concrete last Thursday at the site of the new skate park in Yep Kanum Park in Colville. Jeremiah Rainer spearheaded the project that is using $15,000 in Spencer Trust fund monies through the City of Colville to construct the concrete slab and refurbish wooden ramps and jumps from the former Weeman Skate Park that was located across Hawthorne Street adjacent to the Colville Junior High School.

Bert Francis Matlock, age 89, a longtime resident of Boyds, passed away on June 24, 2011 at his home. Bert was born on May 10, 1922 in Marshall, OK, the son of Noah Coleman and Nora Ann (Neuner) Matlock.
Lawrence âLarryâ A. Schmid was born on Nov. 18, 1946 in Riverside, California and died on June 24, 2011 at the young age of 64. He was the son of Arnold and Betty Schmid.
Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, teacher and friend who enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, fishing, juggling and living life. He was an honest and caring man and those who knew him loved him.
Perry J. Miller of Chewelah passed away June 20 at St. JoÂŹsephâs Hospital. He was 90.
Perry was born Feb. 8, 1921 in Brookfield, Ill., to Perry D. Miller and Barbara L. (Eminger) Miller. He attended high school in Ripley, OK and college at Oklahoma State University (Stillwater).

Darlene V. Eason, a longtime resident of Kettle Falls, passed away on June 23, 2011 in Kettle Falls at the age of 79. She was born in Janesville, WI, the daughter of Bert and Cynthia (Blackman) McCaslin.
Darlene moved from Wisconsin to Walla Walla with her family when she was five and then to Pleasant Valley (Rice) when she was 12. She married Sam Eason on March 17, 1979 and they enjoyed 32 wonderful years together. Darlene was one of the most pleasant people anyone could ever know.
