One of the biggest and most popular one-day golf tournaments of the season at Dominion Meadows Golf Course will be held Friday, May 4 when the Mayorâs Open Golf Tournament unfolds at DM.
Presiding over this yearâs tournament will be new Colville Mayor, Deborah Rarrick.
Entry fee is $60 per player (includes 18 holes of golf, shirt, lunch, dinner and âgoodie bagâ).
There are also hole sponsorships ($100), team and hole sponsorships (combined $325) and combined team and shirt sponsorships ($750) available.
Mustangs still havenât been on their field
Despite not having the opportunity to get on their field because of the soggy early-season conditions, Northport Highâs baseball team turned in an auspicious season-opening sweep in Spokane against St. Georgeâs back on March 20.
The Mustangs, who got solid, if not impressive early-season pitching and timely hitting, swamped the Dragons, 14-3, 13-2.
In the opener, Jeremiah Johnson, Brandon Hedrick and Jace Shaw combined on a 13- strikeout no-hitter.
Bulldogs face NWC, Riverside this week
Kettle Falls High got its snow-bound and water-soaked early baseball season underway late last week. The Bulldogs, with only 14 players, most who havenât logged a whole lot of varsity time, lost a tough 4-2 decision (eight innings) to Northeast A League favorite Chewelah last Friday and swept host Liberty Saturday in a Northeast 2B (Bi-County League) doubleheader at Spangle.
KFHS plated 37 runs in 16-0, 21-9 routs of the Lancers.
Craig Cosby was found guilty of Murder in the First Degree by a jury in Stevens County Superior Court Friday afternoon. The 12-person jury unanimously found Cosby guilty of shooting and killing his wife, Susan Cosby, at the couple's Marcus home in 2009. Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17.

Colville High, idle since splitting a season-opening doubleheader at Connell, hopes to get a soggy Hofstetter Field in playing shape this week.
The Indians, who didnât play a scheduled doubleheader last Saturday against Omak (either at home or in Okanogan County), were scheduled to play their Northeast A League baseball opener at Newport on Tuesday. But Newportâs field wasnât in any better shape than Colvilleâs. Whether that one will be rescheduled is anybodyâs guess at this juncture of a wet, cool early spring.
Defending NEA, District
championâs off to fast start
The Colville High girlâs tennis team got its 2012 season off to a fast start last week with wins over Chewelah and perennial Northeast A League power Lakeside.
In both matches, the Indians were unbeaten in singles and lost both doubles matches.
THIS WEEK
Weather permitting, Colville was scheduled to host Freeman on the CHS courts Tuesday in a NEA match-up and travel to West Valley on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) for a non-league battle with the Eagles.
March 28th
Will M. Christian, a longtime resident of Colville, passed away on March 26, 2012 in Colville after a long illness with Alzheimerâs. He was born on Feb. 8, 1966 in Colville, the son of Glenn and Dianne (Terry) Christian.
When he was two-weeks-old, the family moved to the Seattle area where he was raised and attended school in Renton until the age of 16. While in school, Will enjoyed playing basketball, baseball and soccer in the city leagues.
James Houston Porritt, age 79, passed away on March 17, 2012. He was born on May 25, 1932 in Salt Lake City, UT, the son of James Nathaniel and Dorothy Grace (Wagner) Porritt.
He was a very loving man, and enjoyed spending time outdoors. After serving in the U.S. Navy, James worked as a Marine Engineer in Alaska and as a Commercial Fisherman in Washington before going to work for the National Park Service in Washington State.
John Rowlee Marchinek, 60, passed away at his home in Kettle Falls on March 19, 2012.
The funeral was held the following Saturday at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville, where he was laid to rest.
John Marchinek was born June 14,1951 to John âPeteâ and Margaret (nee Rowlee) Marchinek in Colville. His father was a Track Inspector and his mother was a Telegrapher for the Great Northern Railroad. Johnâs birth was followed by a sister, Jeanne, but both lost their mother, Margaret, shortly after.
Chewelah gets tougher than expected win
The Chewelah Cougarsâ baseÂball team played the first game of their season last week, winÂning in eight innings at Kettle Falls, 4-2.
Caleb Wiebe pitched six strong innings for Chewelah, striking out 10 and only giving up one run, while Calvin Connal got the victory in relief, striking out four and givÂing up one run in his two inÂnings of work.
Wiebe outdueled Kettle Falls right-hander, Tyler Vining.
Head coach Luke Jeanneret was pleased with the difficult opening win.
