Colville wins annual Stevens County Forestry Contest

The Stevens County Conservation District hosted their 35th annual Forestry Competition last week at Douglas Falls Park northeast of Colville. Six high schools from around the region competed.
The long-running competition gives students the op¬portunity to test their skills in a practical setting.

Peace sign proposal pulled

The Colville City Council chambers turned into an ideological battleground last Tuesday as community mem¬bers volleyed back and forth during a public comment pe¬riod.
The issue at hand was whether or not a trio of local residents should be allowed to turn the “C” into a peace sign on Colville Mountain for Earth Day. The author of the pro¬posal, Peter Quinn, withdrew his proposal, saying he “didn’t mean to offend anyone,” and that his desire to construct the temporary peace sign was not politically motivated.

HALDON L. “SLIM” HOLFORD, 85, Morton, WA, died Tuesday, April 3, at Morton General Hospital, Morton, WA. A Graveside Service was held 2 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Meyers Falls Cemetery, Kettle Falls, WA. Services were under the direction of Brown Mortuary, Morton.

Emily Gladys Knapp passed away on the evening of Good Friday, April 6, 2012 in Olympia, WA at age 96, due to complications that arose waiting for treatment of a compression fracture. She was a 66 year resident of Colville, Washington and loved her town.

Elsie Agnes Hazel Jamieson Grant, born in Colville Oct. 10, 1920, passed away April 5, 2012, at the age of 91 in Richland, where a memorial gathering was held. She was the only daughter of Scottish immigrant parents, Gavin Waddell Jamieson (1877-1952) and Mary Aitken Potter Jamieson (1875-1961), who came to Rice in 1909, via South Africa, and was the sister of the late Donald Jamieson (1908-1989) of Colville.

Alvin James Girdner, a resident of Colville, passed away on April 12, 2012 in Colville at the age of 82. Alvin was born on January 28, 1930 in Bernice, OK, the son of Alex Louis and Susie Evelyn (Evans) Girdner.

Almeda Rose Davis was born August 24, 1952 to Donald Deck and Rose Ann (Martin) Deck of Tacoma. As a newborn she lived in Yelm, WA. with grandpa Jim and Nanny. At the age of two, she was adopted by Leland Gardner. As a young adult, she married Tom Waters and was blessed with a son, Kahle. Almeda later married Manford James (Jim) Davis on August 24, 1985 on the Davis’ family property in Montesano, WA. Over time they were also blessed with two boys: Paden and Colton.

John Robert Pickett

John Robert Pickett was born June 24, 1941 and passed away April 10, 2012. John was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho. His family moved to Portland for his junior high and high school years. After graduation John served in the United States Coast Guard. Throughout his life, John had several jobs including logging, working at Safeway, selling tractors, and as a security guard.
