Football journey nears an end for Kegel
It has been an interesting ride for this minister’s son and former small town and small college football star to the cusp of parenthood and the wild vagaries of European professional football.
And no, we are not talking about the other futbol.
So it goes for one of the best all-around athletes and football players to ever snap on a chin-strap for Columbia High School (Hunters).
WIAA ‘Classic’ moves east
Colville High will get its 2012 football season underway in a different fashion on Saturday.
The Indians, who will move up to Class 2A this fall and return to the Great Northern League for the two-year WIAA reclassification cycle, will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Freeman in the so-called WIAA Kickoff Classic at Eastern Washington University.
It’s the first time in memory that a CHS football game has started the season on a Saturday afternoon.

Numbers down at Columbia/Inchelium
If Columbia-Inchelium plans to be a factor in the Northeast 1B (eight-man) football race this fall, the Timberwolves are going to have to get it done with fewer players.
Chuck Wyborney, in his 21st season coaching at either Columbia High or for the Columbia-Inchelium combine (third season), has only 15 players out this season (eight from Columbia and seven from Inchelium).
C-I, who finished a disappointing 3-7 last season, should see improvement in that bottom line this fall, low numbers or not.
Bulldogs move into NEA
There are some new challenges facing the Kettle Falls High football program this fall. Primary among them is the fact that the Bulldogs were moved back into the Class 1A Northeast A League after the most recent WIAA enrollment count.
While KFHS will more than likely move back down to the more comfortable (and appropriate) confines of Class 2B in two years, they are going to have to find a way to compete with bigger schools in the NEA in the interim.
Color the Indians ‘green’ this fall
Two-time defending Northeast A League champion Colville High will get acquainted with their old neighbors in the Great Northern League this fall and in 2013 after WIAA realignment dumped the Indians back into Class 2A.
Given the inexperience predominantly across the board in the CHS football camp this fall, the NEA would have been a nice fit again, but that’s not the way the enrollment numbers rolled this time around.
Gypsy was born Sept. 8, 1980 and passed away Aug. 1, 2012 at the age of 31 from a car accident.
She was born in Ventura, CA and lived in Alturas, CA. She went through grade school in St. Maries, Idaho and spent the middle school years in Newman Lake. The family then settled on a farm in Northport. She attended Northport High School and Mary Walker High School in Springdale.
As an adult, she spent a number of years in Spokane, where she graduated from Glen Dow Academy before moving back to Northport.
Jayne LaClaire (Skold) Evans Northrup passed away peacefully on August 14, 2012 surrounded by the support and love of her family. She died at the age of 86. She was born the daughter of Archie and Myrtle (Ringstrom) Skold on March 26, 1926 in Benson, Minnesota.
Jayne graduated from Benson High school in 1944. She married Merlyn Wayne Evans on Sept. 3, 1947 and gave birth to their five children from 1948-1961. She attended Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating in 1947. She enjoyed attending as many reunions as possible.
Jean Louise Larson, 92, passed away on August 18, 2012 at her daughter Judy Hall’s home near Colville. Jean was born to Leo Morris and Adele (Lampert) Morris in Spokane on March 27, 1920.
Florence Mildred Enright passed away on August 26, 2012 at the age of 94. She was born the daughter of Burt and Lucy (Richart) Thompson on Nov. 17, 1917 in Northport. Florence attended school in Northport and Colville and graduated from Colville High School in 1936.
On June 25, 1938, Florence married Merle Bernard Enright. Together they had two children, Jane and Betty.
Flora May Cottrell passed away on August 18, 2012 in Northport at the age of 79. She was born the daughter of Elmer and Tince (Branham) Oliver in Paso Robles, CA on Sept. 30, 1932. She was a twin being the eighth child out of 13 children.
Flora married Don Woodford Cottrell on May 27, 1950. They moved from Southern California to Fort Bragg with their three children, and then moved to Casper, CA, where they lived for 17 years before relocating to Northport.
