Genealogy Society hosts sessions

During the month of February, members of the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society will be available at the Colville Public Library on Thursday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. to offer instruction and assistance on how to use various resources (books and on-line) to capture family history.

Creative Patriotic Art Contest

Kelly O’Keefe Post No. 6963 Ladies Auxiliary member Erin Grommé announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW Ladies Auxiliary “Creative Patriotic Art Contest.”
The contest is part of the Youth Program, which is the fifth program to be adopted by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. It started with the formation of the Daughters of the VFW in 1935. It was apparent in 1938 that hundreds of Auxiliaries were assisting in all kinds of youth activities in addition to the Daughters.

Forest restoration dollars will create jobs

The Colville National Forest was recently tagged for a federal restoration grant that may provide as many as 258 jobs in Stevens and Ferry County.
The $968,000 grant will fund restoration work on an area of nearly a million acres in Ferry County, according to the Northeast Washington Forestry Coalition.

Five Chewelah wrestlers head to Mat Classic

The Jenkins High wrestling team will be moving five wrest­lers on to Mat Classic XXIV this week in Tacoma after a suc­cessful regional tournament at Colville High School last Sat­urday.
As a team, Chewelah fin­ished sixth in the 12 team tour­nament and after their ifth place showing in the six-team Northeast A League District tournament, coach Patrick Mitchell was very pleased.
“It was the best tournament we wrestled as a team all year,” Mitchell said.

Tyler Vining will represent Bulldogs at Mat Classic

finishes fourth

Kettle Falls High standout Tyler Vining will represent the Bulldogs at Friday and Saturday’s Mat Classic XXIV in the Tacoma Dome.
The KFHS junior will open his tournament on Friday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. in a first round match-up with Michael Siperly of Adna. A win would draw a quarterfinal match-up Friday evening at about 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Darrin Springs (Darrington) vs. Austin Reisdorph (Pomeroy) opener.
Vining led the KFHS contingent at the 1B/2B regional at Kittitas High School last weekend with a fourth place finish.

Northport faces loser-out game with Cusick

Valley Christian sends NHS to loser-bracket

Northport High (18-4) will face Cusick (10-12) in a District 7 1B boy’s loser-out game Wednesday at Deer Park High School. Game time is 5 p.m.
The Mustangs, who dropped a 59-37 decision to third-ranked Valley Christian (19-2) last Saturday night at Deer Park High School, will play Cusick for the fourth time this season.
Northport is 3-0 against the Panthers to date, but if the first three encounters with their Panorama League rivals haven’t necessarily been buzzer-beaters, they’ve been close.

Colville heads
to Chelan

Colville High built a big early lead and cruised to a 44-26 win over Newport to annex the District 7 1A girl’s basketball championship last Friday night at Mead High School.
Behind Ashley Knight’s 28 points and 12 rebounds, the Indians (16-6) advanced to the title game with a 51-36 win last Wednesday over Lakeside in the opening round of District play.
CHS advances as District 7’s top seed to this week’s Bi-District 6-7 Tournament at Chelan High School and the Chelan Community Center.

Colville wins regional title

Indians will send a record 11 to ‘Classic’

Colville High will send a record 11 wrestlers to Friday and Saturday’s state all-divisions Mat Classic XXIV spectacular in the Tacoma Dome after annexing the East Region 1A championship last Saturday at Colville High School.
In front of a packed house in the CHS gymnasium, the Indians were able to crown three champions among the Northeast A and Caribou-Trail League teams in attendance: Jesse Morrison (120), Trenton Welton (126) and Chandler Knight (170).

Opulence, Poverty and Rotary

Greetings and salutations, one and all. It feels longer (perhaps that’s a slight trace of jet lag still talking), but we have only been in Bangalore for a few days now. They have been some of the fastest, most secure, most hectic, most educational days of my existence.
For those who haven’t been in the loop, I have journeyed halfway around the world with a Group Study Exchange Team from Rotary District No. 5080 to experience life and culture in Bangalore, India in the state of Karnataka.
