MIA Veteran honored 70 years later

Through the steady cadence of taps being played at the Colville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) comes the soft sound of weeping---Franseen “Benny” McKay mourns the brother she lost 70-years ago when she was a girl of 12.
In 1943, Air Corp 2nd Lt. William W. Bartlett was killed in action when his bomber was shot down over Austria while returning from its first mission. Bartlett, the plane’s navigator, and the rest of his crew, were considered missing in action (MIA). Their bodies were never recovered.

Lillian West

Lillian West, 92, passed away Jan.31, 2013 at Buena Vista Nursing Home. She was born on Jan. 28, 1921 in Waverly.
She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Beaman (Greg),Hillsboro, OR, and Rex Willett (Linda), Spokane; four grandchildren, Cole Beaman (Christie), Aloha, OR; Katie Bea¬man,, Hillsboro; Jeffri Willett, Colville; Keelan Willett, Spokane; five great-grandchildren, Kylie, Deviant, and Jennakai Willett, Colville; Tayla and Zuzana Beaman, Aloha.
Her loving and caring being will be missed by friends and family and by all who made her acquaintance.

Jerry Coffey

Gerald Gene “Jerry” Coffey passed away Jan. 27, 2013 in Spokane at the age of 77. Jerry was born on May 29, 1935 in Tuolumne, CA to Gerald and Ruth (Sorenson) Coffey.
Jerry lived in Minnesota and Iowa before moving to Colville in 1947 with his mother and stepfather, Perry Bockness. He graduated from Colville High School in 1953 and served in the Colville National Guard. Jerry married Sharon Wilson ion 1956 and together they had a busy family life raising their four daughters.

Lester Riley

February 19, 2013

Lester Wilfred Riley was born on June 27, 1922 to William Lorenzo Riley and Audrey Lillian Steeley in New Meadows, Idaho. The Riley family moved to Rice in 1927 when he was five years old.
In 1943, Lester enlisted into the United States Army during Word War II, where he was assigned to the Combat Engineer Division and was stationed in the Philippines. While there he operated heavy equipment in the building of roads.

Francis Swan

Francis “Franco” Lee Swan, 59, a lifelong resident of Inchelium, passed away on Feb. 9, 2013 in Inchelium at his home. Franco was born on July 20, 1953 in Inchelium, the son of Corbett and Mildred (Meusy) Swan Sr.

Julia Braucher

On Jan. 25, 2013, our beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, Julia (Judi) Marie Braucher, passed into Our Lord’s loving arms at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends.
Judi was born on Nov. 4, 1939 to Leigh and Ella Deaver, in Pasco. She attended Daisy School, which was consolidated and renamed Evergreen by her after she won a contest to rename the school. She attended high school at Kettle Falls High School, and afterwards, marrying her high school sweetheart, Robert Harrington, with whom she had eight children and who preceded her in death.

'She was really annoying'

Two fifth-graders at Fort Colville Elementary School in Colville allegedly masterminded a murder plot to kill a classmate because they found her to be “really annoying,” according to court documents that were released in the case last week.
The fifth-graders, currently locked up at Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Facility near Medical Lake, had their alleged murder plot foiled earlier this month when a fourth-grader at the school told school staff that he had witnessed one of the boy’s with a knife.

The scene at Woodland Theatre is akin to an unusually charted 100-meter dash---everyone is running in different directions, but all are arriving at the same place. That place would be opening night Friday, March 1 for The Wizard of Oz.

Fire at Saundra's Furniture

Shock seized the Colville community earlier this evening when a fire broke out at Saundra's Furniture on Main Street. The Colville Fire Department received the call sometime after 8 p.m. and arrived to find the building engulfed in flames. Curious onlookers crowded sidewalks across the street until law enforcement told people to stand back.

Colville High turned in some successes at last Friday and Saturday’s Class 2A Region IV wrestling tournament at Ellensburg High School. But there were also some disappointments.
District 7 champion Colville High qualified six wrestlers to Friday and Saturday’s Mat Classic XXV at the Tacoma Dome. The Indians, who also shared a GNL dual meet championship this winter, finished fourth at the regional with 150.5 points.
