Don McKern

December 12, 2013

Donnel “Don” Waldo McKern, a longtime resident of Rice, passed away on Nov. 18, 2013 in Colville.. Don was born on Jan. 2, 1945 in Colville, the son of Morse and Blanche (Felts) McKern.
Don was raised in Rice and graduated from Kettle Falls High School in 1963. After graduation, he attended Washington State University for two years. Don then transferred to Wenatchee Valley College, where he studied for one year until he enlisted with the United States Air Force. He served his country until 1971, when he was honorably discharged.

Alloma Ransbottom

Alloma Dell Ransbottom, age 65, passed away in Spokane on Nov. 29, 2013. She was born on Oct. 30, 1948, the daughter of Donald and Irene (Fritz) Billedeaux in Longview.
Alloma grew up and attended school in Battleground. After graduating from high school, she lived and worked in the Vancouver area until relocating to Kettle Falls in 1972 when she started working at Boise Cascade.

Capitol Christmas Tree art winner from Panorama School

Sarah Haney (pictured) is the winner of the 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree art contest. The 16-year-old Panorama Alternative School student won the grand prize and the $1,000 that goes with it. She also collected $200 as the Youth category winner. The contest was co-sponsored by The U.S. Forest Service and the non-profit Choose Outdoors from Colorado. The art contest was open to all residents of the home state where this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree was provided (the 88-foot Engelmann Spruce came from the Colville National Forest in Pend Oreille County).

Operation Santa keeps Christmas merry

Contrary to popular belief, Santa Claus’s elves can most likely be found at the Carpenter’s Union Hall No. 1136 in Kettle Falls, as opposed to the icy climbs of the North Pole. Judy Davis and her small, but loyal group of volunteers are back at it again, resurrecting Operation Santa (OS) for the Christmas season.
Operation Santa is a non-profit group that collects and accepts donations of new and gently used toys, clothing, household items and other wares, then sets up shop in the union hall in December to distribute items to area fami¬lies in need of a merry Christmas.

Jack Schwager

Jack O. Schwager, beloved husband, dad, granddad, brother and uncle, passed away in Colville on Nov. 25, 2013 at the age of 89.
Jack was born in Spirit Lake, Idaho, Feb. 29, 1924 to Jack Sr. and Sadie Schwager.
His early years were spent in the Malo/Curlew area. The family then moved to the Blue Creek area in 1940. Jack graduated from Jenkins High School (Chewelah) in 1941.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1944, serving in the European Theater during WWII.

Dennis Williams

Dennis Lee Williams, 63, of Kettle Falls,  died Nov. 21, 2013 from a stroke in Spokane
Dennis was born on Dec. 4, 1949 in Russellville, Arkansas to Donald Lee and Loretta Mae Williams, who preceded him in death.
Surviving him is his brother, Jack Williams, Bigfork, MT; sister Cheryl Gerdrum, Great Falls, MT, and ex-wife, Marie Williams, Colville.
A viewing was held Dec. 2 at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home in Kalispell, MT. A graveside service followed that afternoon at the Bigfork Community Cemetery, Bigfork, MT. 
He is loved and will be missed greatly.

B. J. (Sherie) Johnson

December 5, 2013

Billie June (Sherie) Johnson, age 86, a long-time resident of Northport, passed away on October 27, 2013 of a stroke at Buena Vista Assisted Living in Colville.   Sherie was born on August 11, 1927 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
 Sheri traveled to many places during her young life.  As an adult, she spent many years in Alaska fishing and living off of the land.  She had many adventures there and many good friends and relatives.

Julie Entwistle

December 5, 2013

Julie Lynn Entwistle, age 53, passed away on Nov. 25, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born on May 18, 1960, the daughter of Arnie and Liz (Warner) Bocker, in Bellevue.
In 1966, the family relocated from Bellevue to Addy and bought a farm.

Donald Mahaffey

December 5, 2013

Donald C. Mahaffey a 17-year resident of Kettle Falls, graduated to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully in Spokane on Oct. 20, 2013, five days before his 71st birthday. He was born Oct. 25, 1942 in Aberdeen to James and Kay (Compton) Ma¬haffey.
