Donald Grub

December 15, 2011

Donald Neil Grubb passed away peacefully at his home in Chewelah on Dec. 6, 2011. Donnie was born in Wattford, North Dakota on Dec. 9, 1934 to Robert Grubb-Charlson and Nora Ann (Barhart). Donnie was one of 10 children. The Grubb family moved to the Chewelah area about the time Donnie was in third or fourth grade. He graduated from Jenkins High School in 1953.

John Haynes

John Raymond Haynes, age 99, for many years of the Inchelium area, passed away on Nov. 22, 2011 on to his heavenly reward.
John was the son of Thomas and Etta Haynes and was born in Laurel, Oregon. He had one sister and five brothers, all who preceded him in death.
John worked in the lumber industry for many years, a good share of the time as a saw filer.
He moved to Inchelium, starting the Chapel of the Pines, which he was pastor for about 18 years, along with his wife, Gladys, who preceded him in death in 1998.

Cora Dorayne Clinkenbeard

Cora Dorayne Clinkenbeard (“Dory”) will be remembered by family and friends as a woman who loved and cared for her family and friends.
Dory, 69, of Colville, was called home to Jesus suddenly and unexpectedly on Dec.5, 2011.

Indians lose badly to East Valley, Cheney

After picking up wins over Priest River and Reardan to open the season, the Colville High boy’s basketball team ran up against a couple of athletic Great Northern League 2A clubs last week in non-league home games.
The Indians (2-2) didn’t handle pressure at all well either night and lost to schools CHS will see next fall when they are forced to move back up to the Class 2A GNL. WIAA enrollment figures used to determine classifications for the next two-year cycle (2012-13 and 2013-14) indicate that Colville will be moving back up.

Northport off to fast start

Schedule gets more rigorous
after the holiday break

Northport High is off to a fast start this 2011-2012 boy’s basketball season. The Mustangs, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Panorama 1B League, haven’t really gotten into the meat of their schedule yet, according to coach, Erik Stark.
“Our record looks good, but we have played a lot of young and inexperienced teams,” Stark said. “The really good team we played (Valley Christian), beat us by 40.”
Stark says the Mustangs’ defense is ahead of the offense at this early juncture.

Bulldogs home on the mats Wednesday

Kettle Falls High sent part of its wrestling team to the Liberty (Spangle) Invitational last Saturday.
The Bulldogs may not have had quantity at Liberty, but judging from the third place team trophy Kettle Falls brought home, there was certainly plenty of quality to go around.
Kettle’s Garrett Anderson placed third at 106 pounds and Lindsey Olvera was fourth at 112. Eric Ross was fifth at 125 pounds; Jacob Walsh was fifth at 135.
Winning titles at Liberty were Dan Kearney (152 pounds), Austin Anderson (160) and Tyler Vining (195).

Chewelah boys continue their solid play in December

There will be no usual expansive sports reports on Chewelah boy’s and girl’s basketball or wrestling this week. Chewelah sports correspondent Chris Rader is ill. Catch up on Chewelah sports in next week’s edition of SE Sports.
To recap the week in sports for the Cougars last week, unbeaten Northwest Christian (5-0) downed Chewelah’s boys 79-56 on Saturday in Colbert.
NWC post Kwinn Hanson went off for 37 points on 16 of 22 shooting.
Ben Johnstone led Chewelah with 17 points.

Colville faces busy week

Colville High downed a couple of Great Northern League foes in non-league girl’s basketball last week.
The Lady Indians (3-1) got 17 points and 12 rebounds from senior post Ashley Knight in an impressive 60-41 win at home Friday over old GNL rival Cheney (2-2).
The Indians’ aggressive full-court pressure defense took the Blackhawks out early. Colville led 14-4 after one quarter and was able to maintain the energy and pressure.

Arthur Maurice Cove, Jr.

December 9, 2011

Former Colville resident Arthur Maurice Cove, Jr., 62, of Yakima, passed away on Nov. 17, 2011 after his fourth battle with cancer. Art was born in Stockton, CA on August 18, 1949 to Florence and Arthur M. Cove, MD. He graduated from University of Southern California with a BS in Psychology and an MBA in Finance. He and his wife Katherine moved to Washington state in 1980.

Susan Adams

December 8, 2011

Susan Elizabeth Adams, born Feb. 14, 1942 in Colburn, Idaho, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 26, 2011.
She was the beloved mother of Kathleen Coffin and Jennifer Adams. Susan raised her girls as a single parent. She will always be admired by her children and being a mother and a father to both of them.
