Cougars play out the string

on Friday

The Jenkins High boy’s basketball team is heading down the home stretch of a difficult basketball season this week.
The Cougars looked to pick up their first Northeast A League win last week. But the Cougars were unable to do so, dropping road games to Colville and Deer Park.
On Tuesday, the Cougars faced a struggling Colville team. A big first quarter propelled the Indians (2-14, 2-9) to a 48-37 victory.

Volunteer for your city: Committee positions open in City of Colville

The City of Colville currently has vacancies on the following boards, commissions and committees.
Airport Advisory Board (two openings)
Assists in basic airport planning, operates and maintains the municipal airport, assists in completing written applications for potential funding sources for repairs, improvements or purchase of equipment involving the municipal airport. Consists of nine members that serve a three-year term.
Animal Control Advisory Committee (four vacancies)

Mike A. Brito

Mike A. Brito, 93, a resident of the Denison area of Deer Park, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015.
He is the dear husband of Maire Brito and the father of Jim Brito, Tony Brito, Pat Brito, Ronnie Brito, Adelaida “Lila “ Toma, and Mary Marquez. He has 18 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. Mike’s goddaughters are Margaret Roberts of Utah and Geraldine Trujillo and Olivia Mondragon both of Colorado.

Shaun Mercer

Shaun Michael Mercer, age 50, passed away on Jan. 18, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Shaun was born the son of Robert Clyde and Nancy Lynn (McCrea) Mercer on March 31, 1964 in Spokane.
Shaun attended school in Spokane until the age of 12, when his family moved to Colville. He attended school in Colville and graduated from Colville High School. Shaun was very ac­tive in sports, especially football. After graduating from high school, Shaun played semi-pro football for a brief time.

Perry C. Lewis

February 2, 2015

Perry C. Lewis passed away on Dec. 17, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Helen Lewis; wife, Shirley, and sister, Nellie.
Perry is survived by his siblings, Alice, Carol, Cecil, Darrell and Lonny.
He was a fun and caring man loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Curlew Civic Hall in Curlew with a potluck to follow on Feb. 7 at noon.

Dorothy Pratt

February 2, 2015

Dorothy Ann Pratt passed away on Jan. 11 in Spokane at age 86.
Dorothy was born on March 22, 1928 in Bandon, Oregon. At age 12, her family moved to Sherman Creek. By age 16, her working career had begun. She started working for McIntosh Hardware in Kettle Falls.

Police catch suspect in Addy robbery

On Thursday, Jan. 29, just prior to 12:00 PM, Michael Ray Snyder was apprehended in Marysville, Washington by the Pacific Northwest Violent Offenders Task Force. Snyder was wanted for 1st degree robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection to the Jan. 24th armed robbery of the Old School House Trading Post in Addy. He was also arrested for warrants for 1st degree robbery in Snohomish County and possession of stolen property in Island County.

District ‘2’ seed

There is a big difference between being a one or two seed to the District 7 1A girl’s basketball tournament—and somewhere else.
For one thing, you don’t have to worry about a loser-out game if you’re one or two. A bye is a very good thing in the first round.
The league championship and top seed to the District tournament has pretty much been conceded to Lakeside. But the race is wide open for that coveted second seed and first round bye.

Lady Bulldogs win two of three during week

Kettle Falls (8-9, 4-8) is in the thick of the race for one of four berths to the District 7 2B Tournament that starts next week at Reardan.
The Lady Bulldogs, who won two of three games last week and split a pair of NE 2B games, are on the road Tuesday against Reardan. Game time is 6 p.m.
KFHS returns home on Friday against Wilbur-Creston. Game time is 6 p.m.
Kettle Falls will end the regular season on Saturday at Davenport in another 6 p.m. tipoff.

Family loses house in fire

The fire that leveled the house belonging to Steve and Christie Adams last Wednesday (Jan. 21) may have taken the family's material possessions, but the community is stepping up to try and fill the void. A benefit dinner and auction is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 6 at the Stevens County Ag. Trade Center in Colville. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. consists of spaghetti, garlic bread and salad. Dinner is catered by TJ's and there will be a no host bar. The auction starts at 7 p.m. Cost to attend the dinner and auction is $25 and cost to attend just the auction is $10.
