New league, new challenges for Kettle Falls’ baseball

Despite a low turnout earlier this winter (22 players) when spring practice sessions got underway, expect second year Kettle Falls High baseball coach Justin Collier to field a competitive team as the Bulldogs embark on their first season in the rigorous Northeast 2B League after spending two seasons in the second division of the Northeast A League.

Chewelah should be solid

Softball season
starts this week

CHEWELAH—The Jenkins High softball team is looking to be more competitive in the Northeast A League this spring with a mix of returning starters and experienced freshmen in key positions.
A solid turnout of 20 players, buoyed by 11 freshmen, has allowed the Cougars to field full varsity and junior varsity teams.
Head coach Tom Skok is looking for an immediate impact from those experienced freshmen.

Remaining Kettle Falls 5 acquitted of most charges

In what defense lawyers are hailing as a partial triumph, the three remaining members of the Kettle Falls Five were acquitted of four other charges in a marijuana case that has captivated the nation.
Rhonda Lee Firestack-Harvey, her son Roland Gregg and his wife, Michelle, were found guilty last Tuesday evening in Spokane Federal Court of growing between 50 and 100 marijuana plants on their 33-acre property northeast of Kettle Falls.

Poker night benefits ALS

Residents in Stevens County and Spokane are coming together to take on a formidable, unrelenting foe: Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
The ALS Service Organization, a local group of ALS patients, family members and volunteers, will host the second annual Monte Carlo Night fundraiser Friday, March 20 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Ferguson Bath and Kitchen Gallery, 2304 N. Dollar Road in Spokane Valley. Tickets are $50 a piece.

Wayne Aaron Cochran

Wayne Aaron Cochran passed away on February 20, 2015 in Spokane. He was born the son of Aaron Ellis and Beulah Jeanette (Wampler) Cochran on January 14, 1954 in Colville. Wayne was raised in the Cedar Creek area and attended Lead Point School before attending and graduating from Northport High School in 1972.
Following high school, Wayne attended Spokane Community College where he was enrolled in the mechanics program. While attending SCC, Wayne met his future wife, Jackie.

Leslie Lee Cook, the son of Lee and Hazel Cook was born January 26, 1927 in Kansas City, MO. He lived in Kansas City, also Coffeyville and Independence, MO until age 12 his family moved to Milton-Freewater, OR where he went to school. He joined the Navy at age 17 during WWII. His hobbies were fishing and being in the woods.
He passed away in Colville on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 88-years-old.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanie, and children, Michael, Debbie, Althea, and Bruce.

Laurie Sessman

Laurie Colette Sessman passed away on Jan. 30, 2015 in Colville. She was born the daughter of Floyd M. Matthews and Betty J. Sadler on Nov. 4, 1949 in Los An¬geles, CA. Laurie was raised and attended school in Southern California, graduating from Glendora High School in 1967.
