Mance Leewright

February 10, 2015

Cecil “Mance” Manfred Leewright, passed away on Jan. 16, 2015 in Colville. He was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, on Sept. 12, 1930.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi; parents, Porter and Mamie Leewright; sibilings, Paul Leewright, Ed Leewright, Purvis Leewright, and Carol Hickman, and great-grand-daughter Samantha Denison.

Sergeant Brad Manke of the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office has been voted in as the new Colville Fire Department/Stevens County Fire District 3 Chief, effective Jan. 19. His position was confirmed by Colville City Council Jan. 27.
He succeeds former chief Joe Hirsch, who did not seek re-election.
Originally from Ritzville, Manke enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and visiting with family and friends in his free time. He is married and has a son, 22, and daughter, 15.

4th grader seeks donations for community service project

Kayleb Erdman (pictured) is collecting donations for the Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary as his fourth grade community service project. The community service project is part of the Colville School District’s Character Counts Program. Donations can be taken to the Statesman-Examiner, where a drop box (pictured) is located. Kayleb says pet-related supplies are great. Check the Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary website for a list of appropriate supplies for donation: colvillevalleyanimalsactuary.com. Northeast A District ‘meat-grinder’ next for CHS

Wrestling District at Deer Park

Arguably (or not) the toughest Class 1A-wrestling league in the state will host its district tournament this week.
Colville High, who lost to Deer Park and Northeast A League dual champion and top-ranked Freeman, hopes to parlay a healthier line-up into District 7 1A Tournament success Friday and Saturday at Deer Park High School.
The Indians, coming off easy dual meet wins over Chewelah and Lakeside last week, would like to advance at least 15 wrestlers to the regional meet Feb. 13-14 at Cascade High School (Leavenworth).

Kettle Falls’ girls in playoff

Reardan High

Kettle Falls High 8-12, 4-11) faced a District 7 2B play-in game Monday night at neutral Columbia High (Hunters) against Wilbur-Creston. The results were too late for S-E deadline.
The Lady Bulldogs and Wildcats were vying for the fourth and final Northeast 2B North berth to District. For the loser, the season is over.

Selkirk girls still have a shot at the playoffs

is up next

The Selkirk High girl’s basketball team heads into the final week of Northeast-1B play still in the hunt for a playoff spot.
The Rangers won a non-league game against Clark Fork before splitting a pair of league games--a loss to Republic and a win over Inchelium.
The Rangers controlled the game against a short-handed Clark Fork team from start to finish, holding the Wampus Cats to four points through the first three quarters before cruising to a 35-23 victory.

on Friday

The Jenkins High boy’s basketball team is heading down the home stretch of a difficult basketball season this week.
The Cougars looked to pick up their first Northeast A League win last week. But the Cougars were unable to do so, dropping road games to Colville and Deer Park.
On Tuesday, the Cougars faced a struggling Colville team. A big first quarter propelled the Indians (2-14, 2-9) to a 48-37 victory.

Volunteer for your city: Committee positions open in City of Colville

The City of Colville currently has vacancies on the following boards, commissions and committees.
Airport Advisory Board (two openings)
Assists in basic airport planning, operates and maintains the municipal airport, assists in completing written applications for potential funding sources for repairs, improvements or purchase of equipment involving the municipal airport. Consists of nine members that serve a three-year term.
Animal Control Advisory Committee (four vacancies)

Mike A. Brito

Mike A. Brito, 93, a resident of the Denison area of Deer Park, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015.
He is the dear husband of Maire Brito and the father of Jim Brito, Tony Brito, Pat Brito, Ronnie Brito, Adelaida “Lila “ Toma, and Mary Marquez. He has 18 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. Mike’s goddaughters are Margaret Roberts of Utah and Geraldine Trujillo and Olivia Mondragon both of Colorado.

Shaun Mercer

Shaun Michael Mercer, age 50, passed away on Jan. 18, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Shaun was born the son of Robert Clyde and Nancy Lynn (McCrea) Mercer on March 31, 1964 in Spokane.
Shaun attended school in Spokane until the age of 12, when his family moved to Colville. He attended school in Colville and graduated from Colville High School. Shaun was very ac­tive in sports, especially football. After graduating from high school, Shaun played semi-pro football for a brief time.
