In August of 2008, Scott Batten, sick and emaciated, was homeless on the streets of Spokane. Batten was a veteran, an alcoholic in the last stages, and in need of help.
Batten had abused alcohol since the age of 10; he was addicted to alcohol for over 40 years. If he tried to detox, he would experience severe withdrawals lasting over nine days.
With a fascinating history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupcake) and a role in the war against terrorism (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/06/03/136921564/reports-british...) it would be remiss of the Statesman-Examiner not to offer cupcakes, along with a variety of other pastries, during our bake sale fundraiser Tuesday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
