March For Meals Campaign

Tri-County Senior Nutrition said last week that it will be participating in the national 2012 March For Meals campaign. Tri-County Senior Nutrition’s March For Meals event will include school kids penny campaign and walk-a-thon, Hospital’s Basket Raffle, Eagles Dinner Fund Raiser, Saturday, March 3, 5 to 7 p.m., Soup/Chili Cook-Off, Mayor’s delivering meals, other events still in planning and a Colville Walk-A-Thom on March 22.

‘Northport Project’ seeks funds for toxin testing

In her ongoing efforts to create awareness and education about the affects of commercial pollutants in her hometown, Jamie Paparich is working to raise funds so people living in Northport can be tested for toxins.
Paparich’s “Northport Project” is currently working to raise $3,200 so 30 past and present residents of Northport can send in samples of their hair to be tested for toxins like arsenic, cadmium and mercury.
Paparich said the hair tests, which cost roughly $108 each and can be sent in via regular mail, are more accurate than other testing.

Sowing Seeds for Supper

WSU Stevens County Master Gardeners and the Colville Community Garden will co-host a Sowing Seeds for Supper workshop in March.
This workshop will offer seven gardening workshops and one on food preservation Saturday, March 24, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sowing Seeds for Supper will be held at the Community Colleges of Spokane-Colville Center. 985 S. Elm in Colville.
Registration deadline for this fourth annual event is March 19. Registration fee is $15, plus supply fee. Some hands-on classes have a supply fee.

Lake Roosevelt Commercial Use Authorizations

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is introducing a new permit program to enhance collaboration with area commercial service providers and to comply with National Park Service regulations.
Beginning in 2012, Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area will issue Commercial Use Authorizations (CUAs), which are limited authorizations to provide specific commercial visitor service activities within the boundaries of the area.
Examples of persons required to obtain a CUA include fishing guides, tour operators and boat recovery operators.

Avista requests lower natural gas prices

Last week, Avista filed Purchased Gas Cost Adjustment (PGA) requests with the utility commissions in Washington and Idaho to reduce overall natural gas prices by 6.4 perÂŹcent and 6.0 percent respectively, to be effective March 1.

Better living seminar set

A seminar titled Reversing Diabetes and Obesity with Dr. Galen Comstock, a retired family practice specialist doctor, will be held Feb. 24-26.
Lectures on how to reverse, control and prevent diabetes are scheduled.
These will be combined with plant-based cooking classes/demos.
All classes will be held in the lower level community classroom of the Colville Seventh Day Adventist Church on Cedar Loop.
Classes are free and pre-registration is requested.

Historical Center sponsors art and writing contest

This spring the Kettle Falls Historical Center is sponsoring its 15th annual Art and Writing Contest open to all students in grades seven through 12th in Stevens and Ferry Counties. Entry forms will be available to junior high and high school students at their schools. This year’s theme for art work and writing is Food and Rituals of Northeast Washington Native Americans, which applies to all categories.

Award-winning Blues performer to Cutter

METALINE FALLS—Award-winning Blues and American Roots Music performer Lauren Sheehan will be coming to the Cutter Theatre in the 100-year-old Metaline Falls School on Sunday, March 18, at 6 p.m. for an evening she calls “Hardly Strictly Irish.”
The program is comprised of original songs, Irish melodies and stories, Blues, Folk and Blarney.
Sheehan’s album, Rose City Ramble, was voted the number eight-rated album by Folk DJ Radio and was a finalist in Americana Music for the Inde¬pendent Music Awards in 2006.

Genealogy Society hosts sessions

During the month of February, members of the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society will be available at the Colville Public Library on Thursday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. to offer instruction and assistance on how to use various resources (books and on-line) to capture family history.

Creative Patriotic Art Contest

Kelly O’Keefe Post No. 6963 Ladies Auxiliary member Erin GrommĂ© announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW Ladies Auxiliary “Creative Patriotic Art Contest.”
The contest is part of the Youth Program, which is the fifth program to be adopted by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. It started with the formation of the Daughters of the VFW in 1935. It was apparent in 1938 that hundreds of Auxiliaries were assisting in all kinds of youth activities in addition to the Daughters.
