That game plan served the teenager well on Oct. 22 when he won the Washington Food Industry Associationâ€™s â€śBest Baggerâ€ť state championship at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park in Spokane.
Commander Gary Sheehan of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 6963 has announced the kick-off of the 67th year of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship Competition.
Local high school students have the opportunity to complete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. Local junior high students and students in grades three through five also have the opportunity to complete locally for monetary prizes.
Students begin by competing at the local post level with a deadline of Nov. 1.
The cold weather season is fast approaching and the Colville Warming Center is getting ready to open its doors for the winter. After finding a permanent home in the lower level of the American Legion Hall, the Warming Center has gone through some changes to make this year a success. The center has had a facelift and new energy has been infused into the project. Additional volunteers are needed to extend a generous hand for those who are homeless in the community.
The recent passage of Engrossed Substitute House Bill 1341, which became effective July 28, 2013, places Washington among just a few states who have instituted a policy of reimÂ¬bursement to persons who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes who are later vindicated.

Tiana Berkeley knows what she wants and her apparently quiet, but steadfast persistence gets her just that. So when she asked her parents to let her try her hand at stock car racing two years ago, she wasnâ€™t prepared to take no for an answer.
â€śI just figured she would get out there, get dirty and not enjoy it, because itâ€™s pretty rough,â€ť says her mother, Holly Berkeley. â€śBut when she got out there (on the track) she was enjoying it so much, and to see her big smile when she got out of the carâ€¦she loves it. Iâ€™ve never seen her so passionate about anything else.â€ť
The Washington State Patrol is reminding both the public and other law enforcement agencies that the AMBER Alert system is in full operation despite the shutdown of the federal government.
â€śWeâ€™re hearing of incorrect reports on both mainstream and social media about the status of the AMBER Alert System,â€ť said Carri Gordon, AMBER Alert Coordinator for the Washington State Patrol. â€śThe system is in full operation, and ready to help recover an abducted child.â€ť
Colville police officer Rex Newport, a 15-year veteran of the Colville Police Department, was charged with seven criminal counts, including four felonies involving alleged sexual encounters with women while in uniform that date back to 2011, according to documents filed in Stevens County Superior Court Friday afternoon.
"Our office did file charges (against Newport) today," said Stevens County Prosecuting Attorney Tim Rasmussen. "The prosecution will be handled by by the Washington State Attorney General's Office."
The Federal Government will be closed as current funding expired on September 30, 2013. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is very much aware that any lapse in appropriations imposes hardships on those we serve. Due to this event, the Little Pend Oreille and Inland Northwest National Wildlife Refuge Complex offices and refuges will be closed to the public.
