Win a train ride when you become a constant reader!

When you subscribe to the Statesman Examiner in the month of August, you are entered to win two train tickets to the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club (NPOV) Train Rides. The trip begins in Ione (except over Labor Day Weekend when it runs from Metaline Falls to Ione and return) and runs north through the canyon ten miles to Metaline Falls. The rides are renowned for their scenic beauty and yesteryear charm. They frequently sell out in October, so this is a good opportunity to possibly get tickets!

Chili cook-off could be one hot event

The upcoming Northwest International Chili Cook-off at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds on Sept. 21 will be notable, lively and an enjoyable opportunity.
So says event organizer Bud Budinger, who, for the past year, along with his wife, Joanne, has been working to build participation in the event, which will feature contestants from Colville, Kettle Falls, Canada and even Bellingham, all vying for the coveted title of who has the best chili.
For those looking to participate and test their chili making expertise, it isn’t too late to enter.

Peach Crest fire put out in a hurry

The Kettle Falls Fire Department (KFFD) responded to an emergency call of a fire near Peach Crest Road last Friday, striking hard and fast to quell the flames that were poised to threaten over half a dozen homes in the area. Fire Districts #3, #8, and #7 were also called to the scene, along with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), who also provided air support. In total, the fire consumed 3.25 acres, said DNR spokesperson Rette Bidstrup.

No wasting on Wastewater Treatment Facility

After two years of construction, not counting the sweat and effort put into financing, the City of Kettle Falls is ready to unveil its new wastewater treatment facility to the public. The city will hold an Open House at the facility located at 768 Old Kettle Road, Wednesday July 24 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tours will be given as visitors get an inside look into how wastewater is treated so it can be released back into the environment.

Give a veteran a boost : Penny drive still ongoing

The Pennies from Heaven Drive is still in full-force, so for those carrying around spare change now is the time to unload it and assist the Tri-County Veterans’ Stand Down in the process.
The Stand Down is an annual event that benefits local veterans and their dependents. The two-day event will take place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22 at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds in Colville.
Now through the month of August, the Stand Down committee is holding a Pennies from Heaven drive to raise funds to help cover the Stand Down’s expenses.

A surprise from the past

Sometimes, the past comes back to us in unexpected ways. A little over two months ago, Kettle Falls resident Milles Nelson was refinishing a credenza for his daughter, Debbie, when he discovered a piece of mail hidden away in one of its drawers. However, this was no ordinary piece of mail. It was a piece of V-Mail from one-time Colville resident, Edgar Jarrett, former owner of the town's Napa Auto Parts store, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jarrett of Colville.The correspondence is dated Sept. 26, 1944 and sent from France.

The 49-year-old fitness and health advocate shared the stories of his personal triumphs and tribulations as he went from 280-pounds, de¬pressed and unmotivated to taking control of his destiny.
