Firefighters continue battling Baldy Mountain fire

Ione, Wash. – The Baldy Fire burned actively overnight on the south side of Baldy Mountain, northwest of Ione. Trees could be seen torching on the southwest perimeter in an area that was kept in check yesterday by water drops from helicopters. Firefighters will assess this area to see whether a line being dug by hand along this section of the fire yesterday can be safely completed today. This hand line extends from the upper slopes of Baldy Mountain to Jim Creek Road.
The fire started last week. The cause is still under investigation.

A life light on its feet: Chewelah dance instructor at Dancing with the Cars this Friday

The steps Larry Richardson’s feet made in more than 30 years teaching ballroom dancing would take him around the world one and a half times if they’d been in a straight line, he estimates.
Living again in the town where he was born, Richardson will be applying his dance expertise during “Dancing With the Cars,” a street dance at Third and Main in Chewelah this Friday, August 7. The 8-10 pm event, sponsored by Chewelah Arts Guild, will offer dance instruction, demonstrations, and contests, as well as food and drink.

Hunters safety course starts August 10

Woodland Theatre celebrates 75th anniversary with movie night

On July 17, 1940, the newly constructed Woods Movie Theater opened its doors in Kettle Falls with a showing of “Turnabout” starring Adolphe Menjou and Carol Landis. On August 7, 2015 Woodland Theater Productions will celebrate the 75th anniversary of their theater building with a double feature of 1940’s movies. Colville Community College’s Rendezvous Theater will be hosting the event, since Woodlands Theatre is currently undergoing stage reconstruction.

Kettle North Complex fire continues

July 23, 2015

The Kettle North Complex was taken today at 6 a.m., by the New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team. Previously, it was being managed by the Three Rivers Ranger District. The Kettle North Complex is made up by 6 fires. Four of the six fires are either contained or out. The Profanity Peak Fire will have approximately 50 firefighters on it today, which will help with the containment of this fire. Firefighters made progress on this fire yesterday.

Two boys killed in Colville fire

On 07-17-15 at 01:42 a.m. the Colville Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 471 N. Cedar. The structure was a two story apartment building with a single apartment on each floor. Two engine companies and a ladder company responded. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy fire on the east end of the second floor, with fire extending throughout the upper floor and into the lower apartment.

The fire had already progressed to a stage that firefighters were unable to make immediate entry and began an exterior attack, cooling and extinguishing the fire until entry could be made.

Explosion at Newport Business

On Tuesday, July 14, at approximately 8:53 p.m. the Pend Oreille County Sheriff 911 Dispatch Center received several 911 calls reporting a large explosion at the Zodiac Aerospace facility located at 501 North Newport Ave. in Newport.

Suspect in Safeway robbery arrested

Colville police have arrested the suspect accused of robbing the Colville Safeway pharmacy Monday, July 13.
At approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday morning the Colville Police Department (CPD) with assistance from the Stevens County Sheriff's Office and Kettle Falls Police (KFP) arrested 22-year-old Joshua C. Means of Kettle Falls on charges of Robbery in the 1st degree.
