A young Stevens County moose, orphaned at just a few days of age when its mother was killed when she was hit by a vehicle, has been put in the caring hands of Licensed Fish & Wildlife Rehabilitator Karen Odle, near Chewelah.
Monty the orphaned moose received a minor neck injury in the accident that killed his mother and was brought to Odle and her Many Gates to the Heart Rescue/Rehab Ranch.

Supply is down
Soaring meat prices are hitting producers, suppliers and consumers across the country. The price of beef and veal shot up more than 10 percent from June 2013 to June 2014, according to the most recent Consumer Price Index. Pork prices rose by 12 percent.
The largest price increases in three years are driven by one principle component: supply.
Drought has thinned herds of cattle in California and Texas. Disease has struck pork.

The Northwest is the curÂrent epicenter for much of the nationâ€™s summer firefighting efforts. Northwest fire officials were tracking more than 17 large fires in Oregon and Washington as of last SaturÂday.
Wildfires have torched close to 950,000 acres in WashingÂton and Oregon.
Fourteen large fires are burning in Oregon, where more than 555,000 acres are ablaze. Washington has seven large fires with acreage involved approaching 400,000 as of this writing.
