Pets & service dogs: Setting the record straight on a fuzzy issue

January 6, 2015

It seems to be a question in constant need of clarification: what makes a service dog a service dog? What’s the difference between a service dog and a companion dog (pet)? Do businesses have the right to ask someone with a service dog to leave?
It’s a slew of uncertainties that can land business owners and public entities in legal hot water for discrimination.
However, it’s not asking questions of the animal owner that is wrong, says longtime dog trainer and competition judge, Jody Hoffman. It’s knowing what questions to ask.

Now coming to a theater near you: Beer and wine

January 5, 2015

Now at a local movie theater near you: beer and wine.
A bill approved by the Washington State House of Representatives in 2013 made it legal for movie theaters to sell wine and beer to patrons 21 and over. It also allows small venues that serve food to sell hard alcohol.
The Alpine Theater in Colville filed their application to serve beer and wine with the Washington State Liquor Control Board last September. The Colville business was approved in October 2014 and began selling alcohol about three weeks ago, according to owner Steve Wisner.

Building named after fallen Colville Green Beret

December 30, 2014

Considering he was a medic, Sergeant First Class Wyatt Goldsmith probably wouldn’t mind having a medical building named after him. Not that he would personally seek or demand the honor, but it seems an appropriate dedication to a man who made the consideration of other’s well-being one of the top priorities in his all too short life.
Goldsmith, a member of the United States Army’s Special Forces, was killed while serving as a combat medic in the Helmund Province of Afghanistan with Company A, 3rd Batallion Special Forces ODA 1314 in July 2011.
He was 28-years-old.
