Shirley Woods

July 28, 2011

Shirley Ann Woods passed away on July 21, 2011 after a courageous fight with colon cancer. Shirley was born in Kerrville, Texas on Jan. 23, 1946. She married the love of her life, Charles “Woody” Woods on August 26, 1962. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband. She is survived by her daughter, Teri and son-in-law, Bruce La Londe, Colville; grandchildren, Shaun and Shelbi La Londe; brother Don and sister-in-law, Sally Juenke, Kerrville, Texas; sister-in-law, Katherin McCoy, Kerrville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vernon John Hills

Vernon John Hills passed away July 18, 2011 in Wenatchee. Vern was born to Joe and Olga Hills on Nov. 11, 1929 on Kelly Hill. Following the death of his mother, he resided with his grandmother in Orient.
After a childhood in Orient, Vern enlisted in the United States Army, serving overseas in the Korean Conflict, where he received a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged of his duties.

John Kratcha

John Kratcha (90) passed away on July 15, 2011 after a brave three-year fight with colon cancer. He was born to John and Edith Kratcha on his father’s birthday, June 26, 1921 in Chester, Montana.

Evelyn June McDonald

July 26, 2011

Evelyn June “Judy” McDonald was born on June 13, 1924 in Bremerton and passed away peacefully after and long battle with Alzheimer’s and Dementia on April 24 in Poulsbo. She was the daughter of Robert and Mabel Carter and the loving wife of S.P. “Mac” McDonald.
She was a resident of the Orient/Colville areas from 1953-2003.
Mac and Junie (as her family knew her) moved to Orient to raise cattle and alfalfa.
They were very proud of being named Stevens County Cattlemen of the year in 1960. Prior to 1953, she and Mac owned and operated the White Pig and Blue Goose Taverns in Bremerton.

Jack Daniels Conger

Jack Daniels Conger “JD” passed away on July 10, 2011 at the age of 31. He was born on October 17, 1979 in Lake County Oregon. He enjoyed martial arts, anything to with the outdoors, and was an avid rock hound. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children. He was a devoted father, constantly seeking self-improvement and greater enlightenment.
He is survived by his children, Nikia and Forest Gabriel, their mother Sarah Sagle, sister Jordana Conger, and brothers Josh and Trent Gabriel.

Benjamin Reeves

Benjamin David Reeves was born on Dec. 6, 1977 to Ronald Reeves and Gwen (Grosboll) Reeves in Walla Walla. When Ben was less than a year old, his family moved to Kennewick. Ben and his family stayed in the Tri-Cities area until Ben was 14 years-old when they moved to Derby, Kansas, where they stayed until Ben was 21. At that time, the Reeves family moved to Rice. Ben stayed in the Northeast Washington area for the remainder of his life, except for a one-year stint in Michigan in 2003/2004. Ben attended Country Haven Academy in Pasco for his elementary years.

Gordon Nelson

Gordon Thomas Nelson passed away peacefully on July 12, 2011 in Colville. He was 80-years- old. Gordon was born on April 27, 1931, the son of John G. and Bentena Uglem Nelson. He was born at the family farm near Lake Preston, South Dakota.
Gordon was the grandson of Norwegian immigrants who homesteaded in South Dakota. He attended Whitewood Township District No. 7 elementary school, a one-room school-house.

John Doppenberg

John Arthur Doppenberg, a longtime resident of Stevens County, passed away on June 29, 2011 in Spokane at the age of 34. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on Oct. 8, 1976, the son of Gary and Karen (Driskill) Doppenberg.
John attended school in both Orient and Kettle Falls. John enjoyed life and loved spending time outdoors. He loved listening to music and playing his harmonica. John was a free spirit and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

JaNell Spaulding

JaNell Andrea Spaulding, 72 of Kettle Falls, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2011. She was born June 8, 1939 in Seattle to James and Reba Stansbury. She had a passion for animals and adopted many abused dogs from different rescue organizations. JaNell was of the Lutheran faith, taught Sunday School, loved God, and was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandma, and a great-grandma. She also loved her pets, flowers and sitting on her front porch visiting with her many friends and neighbors. She was an avid garage sale shopper and enjoyed fishing on the local lakes and rivers.

Katie Elizabeth “Liz” Rainer, a 34-year resident of Colville, passed away on July 11, 2011 in Colville at the age of 90. “Liz” was born on Dec. 31, 1920 in Hartline, the daughter of Frank Leon and Margaret (Harris) Tupling.
Liz moved with her family to Chewelah, where she attended school and graduated as the “May Queen” in 1938 from Jenkins High School. She then moved to Spokane and worked in the house-keeping industry.
