December 15th
There will be no usual expansive sports reports on Chewelah boyâs and girlâs basketball or wrestling this week. Chewelah sports correspondent Chris Rader is ill. Catch up on Chewelah sports in next weekâs edition of SE Sports.
To recap the week in sports for the Cougars last week, unbeaten Northwest Christian (5-0) downed Chewelahâs boys 79-56 on Saturday in Colbert.
NWC post Kwinn Hanson went off for 37 points on 16 of 22 shooting.
Ben Johnstone led Chewelah with 17 points.
Colville High downed a couple of Great Northern League foes in non-league girlâs basketball last week.
The Lady Indians (3-1) got 17 points and 12 rebounds from senior post Ashley Knight in an impressive 60-41 win at home Friday over old GNL rival Cheney (2-2).
The Indiansâ aggressive full-court pressure defense took the Blackhawks out early. Colville led 14-4 after one quarter and was able to maintain the energy and pressure.
December 8th
Chewelah boys basketball split their first two games of the seaÂson this past week, losing a close game to Deer Park, but finishing the week with a strong performance in a win over Kettle Falls.
Against Deer Park, the Cougars overcame a poor shooting first quarter and a 19-3 deficit, but ran out of gas late in the fourth quarter and lost 63-56.
âWe came out flat,â said head coach Rocky Verbeck. âWe were down 19-1 at one point on 1-11 shooting, but the kids showed some resolve and we got it goÂing.â
December 7th
Colville High shared a Northeast A League wrestling title with Lakeside and Riverside last season. There is no reason to believe that the Indians will have to share anything this time around. Randy Clokeâs Indians get the pre-season nod as the team to beat in the NEA.
The Indians, the defending District 7 1A champions, are particularly strong at the lower weights again this season. There are some holes in the upper weights.
Colville returns five of the seven wrestlers who qualified for the Mat Classic state championships in Tacoma last February.
Some new faces will see plenty of mat time when Kettle Falls High School gets its 2011-2012 wrestling season underway close to home on Wednesday at Colville in a Jamboree with the Indians, Chewelah, Selkirk and Republic. Wrestling gets started at 5 p.m.
The Bulldogs of head coach Joe Kerns will be at the Liberty Tournament on Saturday (9 a.m. start).
November 30th
It could be another interesting winter for Colville High girlâs basketball.
The Indians, who finished 17-5 last season, lost five key seniors off a veteran club, but they return a solid nucleus of players and some promising newcomers that could pull some surprises in the competitive Northeast A League this winter.
Colville also returns a couple of familiar names and faces that have been actively involved with Colville girlâs basketball for many years.
What is likely one of the most inexperienced girlâs basketball teams in the Northeast 2B League (Bi-County) this winter will get the 2011-2012 season underway this week.
Kettle Falls High opened the season on Tuesday at the an nual Chewelah Jamboree. The Lady Bulldogs will open their regular season on Thursday at Kettle Falls against Selkirk. Game time is 5:45 p.m.
KFHS will travel to Chewelah for another non-league date on Friday. Game-time against the Northeast A League member Cougars is 5:30 p.m.
November 16th
Colville High volleyball coach Missy Bennett holds up WIAA championship trophy hardware after the Indians downed Castle Rock Saturday night. Bennett has gotten close to a state title before, getting two teams in her 20-plus year run to the championship. âI think Iâll hold on to this for awhile,â she said.
