New challenges for CHS

Indians move
up to Class 2A

Replicating last season’s 15-12 record and a Sweet 16 finish in Class 1A will be tough for the Colville High boy’s basketball team. For one thing, the Indians are playing up and are back in the 2A Great Northern League.
The Indians can only dream about being back where they belong—in 1A…at least for the next two seasons.
CHS also lost two-thirds of a rugged front line when seniors Alex Pond (6-5) and J.R. Henry (6-6) graduated. That kind of size and athleticism will be tough to replace.

Colville could surprise in GNL

Never count out a Colville High girl’s basketball team.
The Indians, who graduated three All-Northeast A performers last season and move up to the 2A Great Northern League this winter for the two-year WIAA enrollment cycle, should still be formidable.
After all, while there are no seniors on this year’s roster, the 2012-2013 CHS varsity is a group that head coach Ray Clark and his daughter, assistant coach Kajsa Brons, have worked with since they were fourth graders.

Kettle Falls Middle School wrestlers get season going

The Kettle Falls Middle School wrestling team has gotten its season off to a very good start.
The young Bulldogs got their season underway at a takedown Jamboree Nov. 13 at Deer Park Middle School. Teams from DP, Kettle Falls, Chewelah, Colville, and Newport took part.

More snow in the
forecast this week

It’s been snowing hard on Chewelah Peak and all signs point to a Black Friday (Friday, Nov. 23) opening at 49 Degrees North Ski and Snowboard Resort.
As of Monday afternoon, there was 24 inches of snow at the lodge and 41 inches at the summit. It was snowing steadily and seven inches of snow had fallen in the past 12 hours. New snow depth was nine inches at the lodge. Nineteen inches of new snow had fallen in the latest storm at the summit.
The temperature at the lodge was 30 degrees and the temperature on top was 27 degrees.

Cusick, top-ranked Liberty Christian clash at Albi

heroics for CHS

A pair of 12-0 teams will square off on Saturday at Joe Albi Stadium for a berth in the State 1B (eight-man) championship the following weekend at the Tacoma Dome.
Second-ranked Cusick and top-ranked Liberty Christian (12-0) will meet in the east of the Cascades 1B semifinal on Saturday at Joe Albi Stadium (1 p.m.).
In the other semifinal on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome, Neah Bay (12-0) will oppose Lummi (10-2) at 4 p.m.
Both Cusick and Liberty Christian (Tri-Cities) have been blowout winners all season long—until last weekend that is.

Chewelah gets by Okanogan

Cougars will host River View

The 2012 season continues for the Chewelah Cougars (9-1, 6-0) after a thrilling 26-20 win over the Okanogan Bulldogs last Friday night at Snyder Field.
The Cougars broke out to an early lead, but defensive adjustments by Okanogan kept Chewelah from breaking many big plays. The Bulldogs allowed only one touchdown after a big Chewelah first quarter. Chewelah’s defense played tough and the offense was able to hold the ball and run the clock for much of the game.

Omak ends Kettle Falls’ season

Frustrating season for Kettle Falls

Kettle Falls (0-9) saw a disappointing high school football season come to an end last Friday afternoon when Omak of the Caribou-Trail League downed the host Bulldogs, 32-15.
As has been the case this fall with Kettle’s return to the Northeast A League, KFHS was solid on both sides of the ball at times, but not nearly solid enough or consistent enough.
“There were moments against Omak when we did some great things and other moments when we couldn’t do anything,” KFHS head coach Curtis Corvino said. “It was kind of a microcosm of the season.”

Northport holds off Entiat

Mustangs finish 4-6 in 2012

Northport High (4-6, 1-5) got behind the eight-ball early at Entiat last Friday in a season-ending Northeast 1B (eight-man) crossover game, but the Mustangs picked up the pace in the final three quarters, overcoming a two-touchdown deficit to register a season-ending 30-28 win.
Northport High head coach Don Fox was proud of his kids for persevering and overcoming a big early deficit.

Colville captures District crown

host loser-out against CWAC

Colville High annexed another district volleyball title last Saturday by downing East Valley in the CHS gym, 25-10, 25-14, 25-11. The fourth-ranked Indians, the defending State 1A champions, are District 7’s top seed to the 2A regional tournament on Saturday against the Central Washington Athletic Conference.

Cougars will host Crossover

The Northeast A League champion Chewelah Cougars (8-1, 6-0) finished an undefeated league season with a 55-7 trouncing of the Riverside Rams (1-8, 1-5) last Friday night at Snyder Field.
The Cougars jumped out to a big early lead and head coach Jim Fisk said that was the blueprint going in to this game.
“We went in and took care of business,” Fisk said. “It was nice to put them away early, get out of there with no injuries and be able to get ready for next week.”
