CHS equestrian club organizes

The Colville High School Equestrian Club is organizing for the 2012-2013 WAHSET season. The main goal of the club is to recognize the equestrian athlete and give them an opportunity to receive recognition in an equitable, positive and educational format.
The CHS Equestrian Club is a non-profit organization that encourages team play, peer acceptance and good horsemanship for students’ grades 9-12.

Mandy Sumner resigns as CHS softball coach

As a young three-year head coach, no one in school history was more successful than Mandy Sumner. But despite guiding the Colville High softball team to a fourth place state finish and two runner-up finishes in that span, the CHS graduate announced her resignation earlier this month.
Sumner, who also headed up the junior high school softball program, is one of the top catchers in CHS history and played for one of the school’s most successful coaches of all-time, Clyde Brown.

Fifth annual Opie-Coxie Tournament is Saturday

Tournament and memorial fund benefits area youth

One of the most popular one-day tournaments in Northeast Washington will tee it up on Saturday, July 21 when the Opie-Coxie Open Scramble golf tournament is held at Dominion Meadows Golf Course.
The format is four or five person teams. Entry fee is $45 per player (if paid by July 18). The entry is $50 if paid on or after July 19. The entry includes green fees and dinner.
Non-participants can buy dinner for $10.
The tournament will start at 10 a.m. Check-in at 9 a.m.

Tiger Triathlon is Saturday

The 22nd running of the Tiger Triathlon will be held Saturday morning. The race will start promptly at 8 a.m. with a swim around Gillette Lake on the Little Pend Oreille Lakes’ chain. Swimmers will bike down Highway 20 to Colville High School, where they will transition to the third and final increment—a run around Rotary Trail. Following the finish of the race, awards will be handed out at CHS. Packet pick-up and the traditional pre-race meal will be held at CHS on Friday evening (6 to 8 p.m.). The meal is annually sponsored by Super 1 Foods.

Panorama Twins open post-season against Mead

Four teams will
advance to State

The Panorama Twins Legion Baseball club (14-2) will open post-season play in the AA American Legion Baseball playoffs on Wednesday at A.K. Jackson Field (Shadle Park High School) in Spokane against Mead.
The loser-out game starts at 4 p.m.
The Twins, comprised of current Colville High School baseball players, are the Federal division champions of the Spokane-based AA Legion circuit. Mead, on a nine-game winning streak, comes in as fourth seed from the National division.

Local horseman takes third at Extreme Mustang Makeover

Gerry Cox, owner of the Mountain House Stables Arena in Arden, recently competed against 45 other horsemen from the western states of Washington, Idaho, Oregon, California, Montana and Ne­vada in the Extreme Mustang Makeover horse trainer’s chal­lenge.
Each contestant picked up a randomly selected wild horse from the Bureau of Land Man­agement wild horse corrals in Burns, Oregon on March 30. Each horseman had 90 days to gentle and train their horse, then return on June 30 to show how much they had ac­complished with their selected mount.

Softball skills camp a success

campers participate

Colville High School senior to be Jammie Madonna’s Summer Skills Camp attracted 47 campers last week. Girls ages 6-13 from Colville, Kettle Falls, Chewelah, Inchelium and even Tacoma participated in the comprehensive softball skills camp last week.
Madonna, one of the top catchers returning to the high school ranks in Washington next season, put on the camp as her required CHS Senior Project.
Madonna said she was very pleased with the turnout and with all the help she got running the camp.

Howes wins state scholastic clay target championship

Kashmir Howes of Colville captured High Overall Ladies honors at the Washington Scholastic Clay Target Championships at the Seattle Skeet & Trap Club June 22-24.
The championships saw youth from across the state representing over 20 schools from elementary through college and organizations like FFA and 4-H competing for the right to be named Washington’s best.
Competitors competed in all three American Clay Target disciplines of Skeet, Sporting Clays and Trap.

Local fishermen come up big in Governor’s Cup tournament

66 two-man teams fish 19th annual event

Local fishermen more than held their own in the 19th annual Governor’s Cup Walleye Tournament on Lake Roosevelt June 23-24. This year, 66 two-person teams headed out early each morning in search of walleye.
Four of the top five teams this year were from Kettle Falls.
“That has never happened before,” pointed out Lake Roosevelt Walleye Club President, Jim Meskan.
This year, over 700 fish were caught by those 66 two-person teams.
