The Chewelah boysâ basketball team remained undefeated in Northeast A League play with wins against Riverside and Lakeside before Christmas
Jenkins High head coach Rocky Verbeck credits strong bench play from Tommy Norman, Cordell Bean, Deylin Peone and Lars Berger for the Cougars ability to grind out wins.
âI think that is going to be our theme this year--we ground out those wins,â said Verbeck. âThey donât score often, but our bench is making the most of their minutes and that is always big for us on the defensive side of things.â
Indians play without Hubbard
Itâs tough to win without your all-league meal ticket.
So it went for Colville High (4-4) in last Thursday nightâs non-league boyâs basketball game with visiting Priest River.
The Indians were playing without their 6-9 junior post, Matt Hubbard. The teamâs leading scorer and rebounder was in Oklahoma with his family.
Colville played well early and led by as many as nine points in the third quarter before Priest River found their collective shooting eye.

The Colville High girlâs basketball team (4-3) won its fourth straight game last Thursday night, holding off visiting Priest River (6-5) and posting a 38-35 win.
Colville got off fast in this one. The Indians put together one of their best opening quarters of the season to date in running to an early 18-6 lead.
CHS turned over the Spartans frequently in the early-going with their full court pressure. But PR battled back, outscoring Colville 10-6 in the second quarter before the Indians regained some momentum with an 8-4 third quarter run.

State coaching Hall of Famer
will be hard to replace
One of the most successful coaches in the history of Colville High School athletics has tendered her resignation.
Missy Bennett, who led Colville High to the 2011 State 1A volleyball championship and to a fourth place finish at the 2012 State 2A Tournament at Pierce College in Lakewood, announced earlier this week that she is resigning a post she has held for 27 seasons.
Bulldogs lose
first to Tonasket
A vastly improved Kettle Falls High boyâs basketball team suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday when visiting Tonasket of the Caribou-Trail League rolled to an early lead en route to a 62-47 win.
The loss was Kettleâs first in five games.
The Bulldogs (4-1) won two of three non-league games during the week, downing Springdale 46-35 back on Dec. 4 behind Connor McKernâs 10 points and blasting visiting Curlew (2-3) 61-33 on Dec. 6.
Colville up next
The Chewelah Cougars girlâs basketball team split their games this week. Jenkins High looked good in a game against a somewhat depleted Deer Park program, while being pushed around some by a bigger, taller Northwest Christian team.
Overall, however, Chewelah head coach Tom Skok is pleased with his team so far and is looking forward to the rest of the season.

Indians will fill
every weight
Colville High exhibited some early-season strength last Saturday at the always tough Deer Park Invitational wrestling meet.
The Indians, who dominated the Northeast A League the past two seasons before moving up to the Class 2A Great Northern League for the two-year enrollment cycle, served notice last Saturday that they will be a power to contend with in the GNL.
With tournament champion Chandler Knight leading the way with a championship at 182, Colville finished fourth in the tournament field with 137 points.
But St. Geo ruins Chewelahâs opener
The Chewelah Cougars boyâs basketball season kicked off the 2012-2013 season last Friday with a game at home against Panorama League power St. Georgeâs.
Unfortunately, shooting trouble from the free throw and three-point lines contributed to the 61-51 loss.
A poor shooting night and foul trouble were the biggest obstacles to overcome for the Cougars, not the 21-point night from St. Geo post Dexter Sienko, according to head coach Rocky Verbeck.
NWC, Okanogan up next this week
Colville High (2-0) got the 2012-2013 boyâs basketball season off to a fast start last weekend with a pair of rugged road wins.
On Friday, Colville led much of the way, then withstood a fourth quarter rally to hold off Class 2B Reardan, 47-41. On Saturday at Sandpoint, CHS fell behind early, but behind 6-9 junior post Matt Hubbard, the Indians won, 46-39.

Indians move
up to Class 2A

Replicating last seasonâs 15-12 record and a Sweet 16 finish in Class 1A will be tough for the Colville High boyâs basketball team. For one thing, the Indians are playing up and are back in the 2A Great Northern League.
The Indians can only dream about being back where they belongâin 1AâŠat least for the next two seasons.
CHS also lost two-thirds of a rugged front line when seniors Alex Pond (6-5) and J.R. Henry (6-6) graduated. That kind of size and athleticism will be tough to replace.
