The Colville KIPS Gymnastics’ team will open its season this weekend at the Winter Spirit Meet in Clarkston. The meet will be hosted by the 360 Gymnastics Club. On Jan. 21-22, the KIPS will compete at The Hub in the Spokane Valley (Flip Fest, hosted by Dynamic Gymnastics of Spokane). Dynamic will also host a clinic on Friday, Jan. 20 that will feature several Olympians. The KIPS competitive team will be in Pullman Feb. 3-5 for the Palouse Invitational. The meet is annually hosted by Palouse Gymnastics.

Colville High senior middle linebacker Alex Pond has been named to the 2011 Associated Press Washington All-State football team (Class 1A).
The teams (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B) are annually voted on by writers and editors from around the state.
Pond, named in the fall as the Northeast A League Co-Most Valuable Player on Defense, helped lead the Indians to a second straight Northeast A League championship. Colville finished 6-5 and made the state 1A playoffs.
Colville Junior High School captured the District Middle School wrestling championship last Tuesday at Colville High School.
The Warriors, who crowned five district champions, edged Lakeside for the team title.
Riverside and Deer Park finished third and fourth. Kettle Falls, with only seven wrestlers in the meet, finished fifth.
After dominating Chewelah, Kettle Falls and Northwest Christian at home during the regular season, CJHS lost a close dual to Lakeside, 36-37.
Colville High School cross-country standout Kevin Carpenter finished 34th in the boy’s intermediate division of last Saturday’s 2011 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Carpenter, who helped lead the CHS cross-country team of Dean Fischer to its second straight Class 1A runner-up finish last month in Pasco, turned in a time of 16:33.04 over the flat, fast Whispering Pines Golf Course track, located a half-mile from the Atlantic Ocean.
A tip-in with three seconds left by 6-9 sophomore post Matt Hubbard lifted Colville High (4-3) to a wild 52-50 win over visiting Lakeland last Thursday night.
On Friday at Medical Lake, the Indians were outscored 16-4 in the second quarter and dropped a 48-32 decision to the Cardinals of the Great Northern League.
Back on Dec. 12, Colville used a big second half to rout visiting Wellpinit, 60-33.
THIS WEEK
Colville was at Okanogan (5-2) on Tuesday in a non-league game against the Caribou-Trail League club. The Pioneers are led by 6-6 senior post Joe Townsend.
Kettle Falls High picked up its first win of the season last week, downing visiting Springdale 36-30 behind Serena Pounds’ eight points and six rebounds.
Taylor Smith led Springdale with 13 points.
On Friday in the Palouse, KFHS trailed 30-8 at halftime at Colfax on the way to a 54-16 loss.
Hannah Harazin led Colfax (3-1, 3-0) with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Amelie Bruya added 11 points.
On Saturday, Kettle Falls dropped a 44-37 Bi-County League decision to visiting St. George’s (2-3, 2-0).
Josie Stanard led Kettle Falls with 12 points.
Alex Wert led St. Geo with 14 points.
The Chewelah Cougars girl’s basketball team dropped three games before their ten-day holiÂday break, losing games to ReÂpublic and Medical Lake at home and falling to Northwest Christian on the road.
In a home game against Republic, a strong first quarter put CheweÂlah out in front, but a better second quarter put Republic up by a score of 23-19 at the end of the first half. In the second half, the Cougars managed to tie the game at 31 on the strength of their pressure defense, but the Tigers pulled away with a couple of late baskets that Chewelah couldn’t answer in a 40-36 loss.

Pend Oreille River targeted
Washington state wildlife officials will ask anglers to help control the advance of voracious and predatory northern pike toward the Columbia River.
In a story from the Associated Press, fishery managers in the next few months plan to enlist fishermen to remove as many of the northern pike as possible from the Pend Oreille River, the route the species is following from Idaho and Montana.

After picking up wins over Priest River and Reardan to open the season, the Colville High boy’s basketball team ran up against a couple of athletic Great Northern League 2A clubs last week in non-league home games.
The Indians (2-2) didn’t handle pressure at all well either night and lost to schools CHS will see next fall when they are forced to move back up to the Class 2A GNL. WIAA enrollment figures used to determine classifications for the next two-year cycle (2012-13 and 2013-14) indicate that Colville will be moving back up.
Schedule gets more rigorous
after the holiday break
Northport High is off to a fast start this 2011-2012 boy’s basketball season. The Mustangs, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Panorama 1B League, haven’t really gotten into the meat of their schedule yet, according to coach, Erik Stark.
“Our record looks good, but we have played a lot of young and inexperienced teams,” Stark said. “The really good team we played (Valley Christian), beat us by 40.”
Stark says the Mustangs’ defense is ahead of the offense at this early juncture.
