The Jenkins High boy’s basketball team is heading down the home stretch of a difficult basketball season this week.
The Cougars looked to pick up their first Northeast A League win last week. But the Cougars were unable to do so, dropping road games to Colville and Deer Park.
On Tuesday, the Cougars faced a struggling Colville team. A big first quarter propelled the Indians (2-14, 2-9) to a 48-37 victory.
District ‘2’ seed
There is a big difference between being a one or two seed to the District 7 1A girl’s basketball tournament—and somewhere else.
For one thing, you don’t have to worry about a loser-out game if you’re one or two. A bye is a very good thing in the first round.
The league championship and top seed to the District tournament has pretty much been conceded to Lakeside. But the race is wide open for that coveted second seed and first round bye.
on the line
Kettle Falls (8-9, 4-8) is in the thick of the race for one of four berths to the District 7 2B Tournament that starts next week at Reardan.
The Lady Bulldogs, who won two of three games last week and split a pair of NE 2B games, are on the road Tuesday against Reardan. Game time is 6 p.m.
KFHS returns home on Friday against Wilbur-Creston. Game time is 6 p.m.
Kettle Falls will end the regular season on Saturday at Davenport in another 6 p.m. tipoff.
Rankings mean nothing at this juncture of the high school wrestling season. In high school wrestling, it’s all about the post-season.
That said, top-ranked Freeman High served notice in the strongest Class 1A wrestling league in the state that the Scotties will be a force to be reckoned with once District rolls around early next month.
Last Wednesday on the home mat, Colville eased past Medical Lake 60-18 in a mismatch that took all of 20-minutes to complete and included nine forfeits.
Cougars lose to
The Jenkins High boy’s basketball team fell in a pair of Northeast A League games last week--61-26 to Freeman on the road and 55-39 to Newport at home.
The Cougars have been hampered by slow starts all season. Last week was no exception. Chewelah was outscored 41-14 in the first quarter. Head coach Jason Norman is at a bit of a loss as to why this keeps happening.
NWC up next
Kettle Falls faces a busy week of Northeast 2B boy’s basketball games this week.
The Bulldogs (0-14, 0-10), who lost to Liberty, 78-45, and to Colfax last Saturday, 62-18, will host Northport on Tuesday in a non-league game (7:30 p.m.) before getting back into NE 2B play on Friday at Springdale (7:30 p.m.).
KFHS will travel to Colbert for a date with Northwest Christian on Saturday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

It was a busy week for the Colville High wrestling team last week.
The Indians started the week last Wednesday night with a much-anticipated Northeast A League showdown with defending 2A state champion and fellow Northeast A League member Deer Park.
The Indians, who came in to the match-up on a two-match winning streak over DP, were favored in their first home match of the winter.
So much for the form chart.

4-1 in NEA
Colville High (5-6, 4-1) picked up a pair of hard-earned Northeast A League girl’s basketball wins last week.
The Indians posted a come-from-behind 42-38 road win at Medical Lake back on Jan. 6, outscoring the Cardinals 16-5 in the third quarter.
Back home last Friday night, CHS again fell behind early before another solid second half propelled the Indians to a 47-39 win over a Freeman High (1-9, 1-4) team that is a mere shell of the powerhouse it once was.
Colville will host Riverside on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
