Colville annexes regional

Top-ranked Colville High rolled through the Region 6/7 volleyball tournament at Chelan last Saturday, beating Cascade 25-15, 25-12, 25-20 and then downing Freeman (for the fourth time this season) in the regional championship, 25-21, 25-9, 25-19.
Jacy Vining had nine kills and six blocks for the Indians, and setter Leanna Carr added 27 assists in the Freeman win. In the win over Cascade, Carr had 31 assists and Benchwarmer’s Athlete of the Week, Erin Little, added 10 blocks, eight ace serves and 20 kills in the two matches.

Pietroburgo, Carpenter lead Indians to second again

Saving their best race of the season for last, Colville High School’s boy’s cross-country team ran its way to second place at the Washington State Championship Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
In what have must have felt like déjà vu, the local harriers, led by senior Biagio Pietroburgo’s fifth place and Kevin Carpenter’s 8th place finish, annexed the runner-up spot behind Northeast A League rival Lakeside. It was Colville’s second straight runner-up finish at Pasco.

It’s playoff time around the Northeast Washington prep sports scene.
High school football playoffs (Crossover/so-called Play-in games) are the featured events this weekend. Colville will host Omak and their Caribou-Trail League Player of the Year, 5-9, 215-pound running back Dylan Green.
Green, who holds most of the No. 4 seeded Pioneers rushing records, including a school single game mark established earlier this season, was also named to the first team defense as a linebacker.
The burly senior is a load and is the focal point of any opposing defense.

Omak up next for Colville

Colville High clinched its second straight Northeast A League football title last Friday night, downing Chewelah and Derek Smith 41-20.
The win for the Indians (4-4, 4-1) sets up a first round State 1A playoff date with Omak on Friday night. Game time Friday night at CHS is 7 p.m.
Omak (2-3, 4-5) is fourth-seeded out of the Caribou-Trail League. The Pioneers were blasted 35-8 by top-ranked and unbeaten Cashmere (5-0, 9-0) last Friday night at Cashmere.
Cashmere will host Newport (3-2, 6-2) in a regional crossover game Friday night at 7 p.m.

Colville captures District crown

Colville High annexed its second straight Northeast A League District Tournament volleyball championship last Saturday afternoon, dispatching talented Freeman, 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20.
Colville is top-seeded into Saturday afternoon’s Region 6/7 Tournament in Chelan. Freeman is second-seeded to the regional.
Lakeside, by virtue of its 25-18, 25-19, 26-24 elimination win over Newport on Saturday, advances as the No. 3 seed.

Northport faces Cusick in critical Northeast 1B clash

In its nearly two years as a resurrected high school football program, Northport High hasn’t faced a game with nearly the implications of Friday night’s Northeast 1B North clash at Cusick. Game time is 7 p.m. Northport (3-1, 5-3) took care of business last Friday, blasting overmatched Republic 58-16 and making Homecoming faithful happy. While the Mustangs were taking care of business, Cusick (3-1, 5-3), struggling with injuries to key players, was upset 24-20 by Wilbur-Creston (1-2, 3-5). It was the Wildcats’ first win in the Northeast 1B South division.

Indians annex second straight NEA volleyball crown

Colville High annexed its second straight Northeast A League volleyball championship last Tuesday with a straight set win over second place Freeman. The Indians eased past rival Chewelah during last Thursday night’s Senior Night festivities.
The Indians, top-ranked in the latest State 1A Coaches’ Poll, were unbeaten in league play this season and lost only one game during the NEA campaign (at Freeman).

Kettle looks for big upset

Kettle Falls High (5-3, 3-2) has already clinched a post-season berth, but there is nothing the Bulldogs would like more than to upset unbeaten and third-ranked Colfax (7-0, 5-0) in the Northeast 2B football finale for both teams Friday night in Kettle Falls. Game time is 7 p.m. Kettle Falls is coming off an easy 44-13 dismantling of Northeast 2B cellar-dweller Liberty (1-7, 0-5) last Friday night at Spangle. Colfax ran to a 26-0 lead over Springdale before easing off the throttle in a 58-36 road win last Friday. Fourth seed Kettle’s win at Liberty clinched a no.

Regional at Plantes Ferry Park next for Chewelah c-c

The Chewelah cross-country teams wrapped up their 2011 regular season with a dual meet against Freeman last Tuesday at Chewelah Golf and Country Club. Both races were close, but in the team scoring, Freeman edged the Cougars in both the boys and girls races.
In the boy's race, Freeman won 22 to 33. FHS runners also placed first, second and third, with Austin Fish running a 17:56 to finish over two-minutes ahead of second place Max Axtell at 20:14.

Chewelah holds off Lakeside

Entering the final two weeks of their Northeast A League football schedule, Chewelah is in the league playoff picture after a victory over the Lakeside Eagles on Friday night.
The Cougars' defense had their best performance of the season, holding the Eagles to 207 yards total offense and stopping three Lakeside scoring threats inside the five-yard-line to preserve the 13-6 win at Nine Mile Falls.
“It was a good win for us on the road,” coach Jim Fisk said. “We’ll take it.”
