Chewelah eases
past Kettle Falls
The keys for the Chewelah Cougars (4-1, 2-0) coming into last Friday afternoonâs game against Kettle Falls (0-5, 0-3) were to take control early, keep mistakes to a minimum and get through the game healthy.
The Cougars accomplished all three goals, dominating the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball on their way to a 36-6 victory.
âWe played up,â said head coach Jim Fisk. âYou have to play at a high level all the time in our league.
âOverall, we did a good job; we didnât make any glaring errors.â

Cougars have solid numbers
Chewelah High cross-country is getting underway with a new crop of runners and with a new coach to lead them. Kevin Kernan is the new cross-country coach, but he is a familiar face to the athletes. Kernan is a long-time industrial arts instructor and coach for JHS.
Despite the varsity volleyball spot opening up with the retirement of Wendy Stenbeck, Kernan chose to go to the cross- country program.
Kettle Falls will
host Lakeside Friday
Kettle Falls fell to 0-3 last Friday night with a 28-9 loss at Riverside. The game marked the Bulldogsâ first foray into the Northeast A League since moving into the Northeast 2B League three seasons ago.
Coleton Collins ran for a pair of touchdowns for the Rams (1-2, 1-0), who led 22-6 at halftime against a Kettle Falls offense that had trouble mounting much offense.
THIS WEEK
KFHS will host Lakeside (0-2, 0-1) on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
September 19th
GNL opener at
West Valley Friday
Colville High (2-1) turned a 12-0 halftime deficit into a 24-20 non-league football win over Timberlake last Friday night in front of the home fans.
The game marked the second in three outings that the Indians have overcome 12-0 halftime deficits with solid second halves. The Indians fell behind by two touchdowns to Freeman two weeks ago in the WIAA Grid Classic at Eastern Washington University before scoring 20 third quarter points and edging the Scotties for the second time in two seasons.
Indians face WV, Reardan & Colfax
Colville High had no problem dispatching a relatively weak Cheney High volleyball team in the Indiansâ first Great Northern League match-up since returning to the 2A league.
Colville eased past the Blackhawks, 25-8, 25-11, 25-19 behind Joellee Bucknerâs 11 kills and seven ace serves. Setter Leanna Carr added 28 assists and Carr and Sadie Learn both had five digs.
It was the only action of the week for the Indians, who visited Deer Park on Tuesday and will return home Thursday against West Valley (7 p.m.).
Soccer team gets DP, West Valley
A young Colville High School girlâs soccer team faces a busy week with Great Northern League match-ups against Deer Park on Tuesday and West Valley at home on Thursday. Both matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. starts.
The Indians (2-2) are coming off a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of GNL powerhouse Cheney last Thursday on the Colville pitch.
In that match, Colville simply got very few scoring opportunities against the Blackhawks.

Indians dominate Lakeland Invite
Colville Highâs defending 1A volleyball champions dominated last Saturdayâs high-powered Lakeland Invitational (Rathdrum, Idaho) volleyball tournament. It was Colvilleâs second straight Lakeland Invitational title.
Cougars get an
elusive win over Indians
The Chewelah Cougars played the Colville Indians last Friday in the annual 395 showdown in Colville. The Cougars broke a recent string of losses to the Indians on this evening, coming away with an impressive 45-21 victory.
Turnovers in an opening game loss to Deer Park were costly to the Cougars, but on this night, Chewelah kept ahold of the ball and turned three Colville turnovers into key scoring drives.

Indians move up to GNL

Colville High lost some key components off last Novemberâs Class 1A state runner-up team, but the Indians certainly have enough left in the tank to make for an interesting reintroduction into the Class 2A Great Northern League.
The Indians will be led by third year varsity standout Kevin Carpenter. The junior finished eighth and got a spot on the podium at last Novemberâs State 1A meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
One of strongest-ever CHS teams
If Colville High were slotted where it belonged, back in the Northeast A League, the Indians would certainly be favorites to successfully defend the 1A championship they won last November in Yakima.
That said, the Indians, who return to the Class 2A Great Northern League this fall for a two-season run, will be a force to contend with in their old league. Under longtime coach Missy Bennett, entering her 27th season at the helm, Colville was always a power in the GNL.
