Mervyn Hays

August 2, 2013

Mervyn Ellsworth Hays passed away peacefully on July 21, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Merv left this life and walked into the arms of his beloved wife Bette, who was waiting on the other side with a fishing rod in one hand and the keys to their motor home in the other! Merv was 84.

David “Sonny” Loyal Hallam, age 79, a lifetime resident of the Kettle Falls and Colville communities, passed away on July 23, 2013 at his home. Dave was born on June 16, 1934 in Old Kettle Falls, the son of Loyal O. and Ellen (Hockersmith) Hallam.

Sprague takes over CHS boy’s basketball program

Brad Sprague has been named to succeed John Foulkes as head boy’s basketball coach at Colville High School.
Sprague, 58, graduated from Hudson’s Bay High School (Vancouver) and graduated from then Whitworth College in 1977, where he played basketball.
Sprague, a school administrator and teacher for 36 years before he retired in 2010, currently serves as Executive Director of the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives. He has worked in Alternative Education for 17 years.

Vining pitches Colville to win at State Legion tourney

Colville’s AA American Legion Baseball club advanced to the third day of the Washington State American Legion tournament in Walla Walla after a 6-2 victory over Burlington in a Sunday elimination game. Colville dropped their opening game to host and top-seeded Walla Walla, 14-2, on Saturday night.
Game one on Saturday against Walla Walla started out well for Colville. The Indians took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Morris and an RBI single by Jesse Morrison.

Chili cook-off could be one hot event

The upcoming Northwest International Chili Cook-off at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds on Sept. 21 will be notable, lively and an enjoyable opportunity.
So says event organizer Bud Budinger, who, for the past year, along with his wife, Joanne, has been working to build participation in the event, which will feature contestants from Colville, Kettle Falls, Canada and even Bellingham, all vying for the coveted title of who has the best chili.
For those looking to participate and test their chili making expertise, it isn’t too late to enter.

Peach Crest fire put out in a hurry

July 23, 2013

The Kettle Falls Fire Department (KFFD) responded to an emergency call of a fire near Peach Crest Road last Friday, striking hard and fast to quell the flames that were poised to threaten over half a dozen homes in the area. Fire Districts #3, #8, and #7 were also called to the scene, along with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), who also provided air support. In total, the fire consumed 3.25 acres, said DNR spokesperson Rette Bidstrup.

Colville United Soccer Camp back this summer

Camp will run
July 29 to August 1

The Colville United Soccer Camp will make another run later this month at the Colville High School soccer complex. The camp will run July 29 through August 1 on the CHS fields.
Youngsters age four to six will meet for camp from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. each day. Youngsters ages seven to nine will participate from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m., and older campers (ages 10-11) will go from 7 to 8:15 p.m.
