November 23rd
John Melville a resident of Deer Park, and formerly of Valley, passed away on Nov. 19, 2011. He was 83.
He is the dear husband of Virginia Malek and the loving father of Cheryl of Chattaroy. His brothers are Robert Melville of Spokane and Gerald Melville of Valley.
John enjoyed numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born in 1928 at Valley, John graduated from Valley High School (Class of 1944), and was a truck driver for many years with the State of Washington Highway Department and then was a slag hauler at ALCOA in Addy. He retired in 2001.
Olga Lydia Carter passed away on Nov. 20, 2011 at the age of 94. She was born on April 6, 1917 in Gifford, Idaho, the daughter of Henry and Meta (Stelljes) Dehning.
Olga attended school in Lewiston, Idaho, then moved to Rubens, Idaho where she met Eldon Carter. The two were married in 1936. Olga and Eldon moved to Colville in 1940, and she and her husband started a garage in the present Empire Auto Parts location in 1943. In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Carter began construction of the building to house Eldon Carter Motors, a Rambler and Toyota dealership now known as Carter Toyota.
A longtime resident of Kettle Falls, Norman passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane Nov. 7, 2011 after a brief illness.
Jacqueline Dee Stahley, 84, passed away on November 14, 2011. She was born on August 27, 1927, the daughter of Lewis and Mabel (Bussler) Geer in Old Kettle Falls where she also attended school. The family moved to Seattle during the war where she met and married Ralph Harman in 1945 while he was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. After Ralph was discharged from the service they spent some time in the Colville area, and then moved to Phoenix, AZ. Jackie went to work for Montgomery Ward and they stayed in Arizona until her retirement.
Larry (Laurence) Edward Miller was born on July 17, 1927 and passed away on Nov. 14, 2011. Larry was born in Newport to Thomas Jefferson and Winnifred Ruth Miller. He had four brothers and three sisters: Ethel (Fred) White, Alfred (Miriam) Miller, George (Lillian) Miller, Helen (Vern) Lamb, Everet Miller, Martin (Beverly) Miller, and Florence (Stan) Childs.
A fire that razed one of the animal sheds at Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary last week has put the organization in a tenuous situation. Already limited facilities and inclement weather make it difficult to care for the animals housed at the Arden facility. The Nov. 16 fire took out the âpuppy shedâ that was the only heated facility at the sanctuary. It is suspected that the fire centered around the woodstove used to heat the building. Kennel Manager Nancy Rose said a dog and two cats could not be rescued from the burning structure.

Poachers, disease, civil wars, heat, cold, rain, drought, pollution, ignorance, indifference. Those are just some of the challenges faced by the 29 conservationists who have devoted their lives to saving the Earthâs endangered species and who have been nominated to receive the biennial Indianapolis Prize, the worldâs leading award for animal conservation. Steven C. Amstrup, Ph.D., is one of them.
November 16th
Colville High volleyball coach Missy Bennett holds up WIAA championship trophy hardware after the Indians downed Castle Rock Saturday night. Bennett has gotten close to a state title before, getting two teams in her 20-plus year run to the championship. âI think Iâll hold on to this for awhile,â she said.
