Pearl Esther (Rice) Ball, age 95, formerly of Rice, entered into rest on July 25, 2011 in the Spokane Valley, her home for the past 33 years.
She was born on March 10, 1916, to Ola and Bert Rice in Rice, which was named after her grandparents, William and Alice Rice.
Pearl attended the two-room Rice grade school and graduated from Kettle Falls High School in 1934.
World War II veteran Wesley Eugene Mathena, 88, died at his home in Kettle Falls on July 22, 2011. The son of Roy and Lessie (Parrish), he was born in Grainger, Missouri on Jan. 27, 1923.
Wesley was raised in Illinois, where he attended school and graduated from Blandinsville High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was part of an elite group of radarmen being assigned to the South Pacific on PT.
After the war, he returned to the Midwest and married Luella Parish in Fort Madison, Iowa on Jan. 16, 1946. This year they celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary.
Richard (Dick) D. Brauner, 89, died July 15, 2011 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Ronna and Eddie Jimenez, in Palm Desert, California, from complications of Pneumonia, COPD and heart disease. He was born July 9, 1922 in Colville. He resided in the summer at Loon Lake, and wintered at Desert Hot Springs, California with his wife of 66 years, Maxine.
Shirley E. Dinkel, a 44-year resident of Colville, passed away on July 26, 2011 in Colville at the age of 79. Shirley was born on Nov. 9, 1931 in Midvale, Idaho, the daughter of Elmon and Grace Edith (Lanway) Bratcher.
She was raised on the family farm just outside of Midvale. Shirley attended school in Midvale and graduated in 1949 as the valedictorian of her class. On Feb. 5, 1949, Shirley married Mike Dinkel and they moved to New Meadows, Idaho, where they began a family.
Danny Lyle Tadlock, age 61, passed onward July 19, 2011 in Olympia. He was born in 1950 in Chewelah to Wendell and Veda Tadlock and raised on a dairy farm near Addy. He is survived by his siblings Larry (Janet) of Yakima, Merle of Addy, Linda (Bill) Way of Colville and his mother, Vera Tadlock of Addy. He is also survived by his three sons, Craig, Jeffrey and Josh in western Washington and daughter, Lindsey in Yakima, and five grandchildren.
Danny worked at Addy’s Northwest Alloys Plant, Rural Resources and the Forest Service in Colville.
William “Bill†Lee McCammon, a longtime resident of Colville, passed away on July 27, 2011 in Colville at the age of 76. Bill was born on Jan. 20, 1935 in Spokane, the son of William Clair and Frances (Nower) McCammon.
The Stevens County Commissioners recently secured a $650,000 state grant for replacement of the Arden Bridge. The grant was obtained from the Washington State County Road Administration Board on July 28 from the board’s Rural Arterial Trust Account. The account is a portion of the state fuel tax that is set aside for emergency projects.
The grant money will be used to fund replacement of the existing structure, which suffered an undermining of its foundation from flood waters earlier this spring.

Members of the Colville Community Senior Center (CCSC) attended last Tuesday’s city council meeting to request that the city set aside $500 a month for the new adult community center, The Hub. Construction on the center, which will be located on Wynne Street, is expected to start in 2012.
July 28th
Shirley Ann Woods passed away on July 21, 2011 after a courageous fight with colon cancer. Shirley was born in Kerrville, Texas on Jan. 23, 1946. She married the love of her life, Charles “Woody†Woods on August 26, 1962. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband. She is survived by her daughter, Teri and son-in-law, Bruce La Londe, Colville; grandchildren, Shaun and Shelbi La Londe; brother Don and sister-in-law, Sally Juenke, Kerrville, Texas; sister-in-law, Katherin McCoy, Kerrville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
July 27th
Vernon John Hills passed away July 18, 2011 in Wenatchee. Vern was born to Joe and Olga Hills on Nov. 11, 1929 on Kelly Hill. Following the death of his mother, he resided with his grandmother in Orient.
After a childhood in Orient, Vern enlisted in the United States Army, serving overseas in the Korean Conflict, where he received a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged of his duties.
