Tournament and memorial fund benefits youth

One of the most popular one-day tournaments in Northeast Washington will tee it up on Saturday, July 21 when the Opie-Coxie Open Scramble golf tournament is held at Dominion Meadows Golf Course.
The format is four or five person teams. Entry fee is $45 per player (if paid by July 18). The entry is $50 if paid on or after July 19. The entry includes green fees and dinner.
Non-participants can buy dinner for $10.
The tournament will start at 10 a.m. Check-in at 9 a.m.

Softball skills camp a success

Colville High School senior to be Jammie Madonna’s Summer Skills Camp attracted 47 campers last week. Girls ages 6-13 from Colville, Kettle Falls, Chewelah, Inchelium and even Tacoma participated in the comprehensive softball skills camp last week.
Madonna, one of the top catchers returning to the high school ranks in Washington next season, put on the camp as her required CHS Senior Project.
Madonna said she was very pleased with the turnout and with all the help she got running the camp.

Howes wins state scholastic clay target championship

Kashmir Howes of Colville captured High Overall Ladies honors at the Washington Scholastic Clay Target Championships at the Seattle Skeet & Trap Club June 22-24.
The championships saw youth from across the state representing over 20 schools from elementary through college and organizations like FFA and 4-H competing for the right to be named Washington’s best.
Competitors competed in all three American Clay Target disciplines of Skeet, Sporting Clays and Trap.

Local fishermen come up big in Governor’s Cup tournament

66 two-man teams fish 19th annual event

Local fishermen more than held their own in the 19th annual Governor’s Cup Walleye Tournament on Lake Roosevelt June 23-24. This year, 66 two-person teams headed out early each morning in search of walleye.
Four of the top five teams this year were from Kettle Falls.
“That has never happened before,” pointed out Lake Roosevelt Walleye Club President, Jim Meskan.
This year, over 700 fish were caught by those 66 two-person teams.

Holling walk-off home run powers Colville Legion to sweep

Colville picked up an important Junior American Legion Baseball (AA) sweep over visiting Northwest Christian last Friday at Hofstetter Park before the thunderstorms and monsoons hit.
Colville (6-0) had to come from behind to win both games.
In the opener, starter Austin Hegney pitched the first five innings and was sharp. Hegney surrendered three unearned runs in the NWC first inning, but he and Colville were solid after that in a 9-3 win.
Hegney went five innings and struck out seven to pick up the win. He issued one walk and scattered two hits.

Tribe 18 U second in Coeur d’ Alene tourney

The Colville Tribe 18U softball team finished second at last weekend’s annual Coeur d’ Alene Crush Tournament.
The Tribe, comprised of current Colville High varsity and non-varsity players, opened the tournament on a wet Saturday with a 9-1 win over the Yakima Steelers (six innings).
On Sunday, the Tribe smashed Trail/Castlegar, B.C. 23-0 (three innings) before edging the Montana Avalanche 6-5 and getting past the Spokane Stealth 9-5 in one semifinal game.
In the championship, Colville fell to the Billings/Butte Dirt, 8-6.

Anderson tops soggy Chewelah Amateur tourney

A field of 41 golfers, most of them from the Chewelah Golf & Country Club, braved constant rain during Saturday’s first round of the 2012 Chewelah Amateur Golf Tournament.
The weather was markedly better during Sunday’s final 18 holes.
Topping the field and taking home Low Gross of the Field honors was Jason Anderson of Spokane. Anderson toured the tight, tree-lined course in 147.
Chewelah’s Jack George captured Low Net of the Field honors.

Blaze Logsdon will work Panorama Rodeo

Will head up clown, barrelman duties

Scott “Blaze” Logsdon, on his first rodeo tour, will be the Rodeo Clown/Barrelman for the 71st running of the Panorama Rodeo Friday and Saturday, June 22-23 in the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds arena.
The Panorama Rodeo will be a two-day show this year. Pro-West performances will be held Friday night at 7 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Free summer running camp for girls is Sr. Project

Meeting for parents is next Monday

Colville High School cross country runner Jill Fenno is hosting a free Girl’s Run For Fun summer running camp this month for all young ladies going into the fifth and sixth grade.
The running camp serves as Fenno’s Senior Project for the incoming senior’s 2013 graduation.
The camp will run from 9 to 11 a.m. from June 18-21. The camp will conclude with a Fun Run for all participants at 10 a.m. on June 22.
“The camp will consist of lessons that incorporate games and running that help the girls to become their best self,” Fenno said.

Colville catcher hosts softball skills camp

One of the top high school catchers in Washington figured that putting on a softball skills camp for youngsters would be a great way to give back—and to satisfy her Colville High School Senior Project for 2012-2013.
Madonna, who helped lead the Indians to the cusp of a State 1A championship last month in Richland, is an All-State selection and the Northeast A League’s Defensive Player of the Year. She is also the 2012 Benchwarmer’s Softball MVP.
