It was another good week for Colville High wrestling.
The Indians turned in a rare shutout in last Wednesday’s Great Northern League wrestling dual with visiting Pullman. CHS recorded seven pins and picked up five forfeits in an 83-0 shellacking of the hapless ‘Hounds.
The quickest pin of the night: Austin Donogh’s don’t blink 13 second pin at 126 pounds.

Newport, Freeman race past Bulldogs

January 16, 2014

Riverside, L-side on tap this week

Kettle Falls (5-6, 0-4) dropped a pair of Northeast A League boy’s basketball games last week at home. Back on Jan. 7 at Kettle Falls Middle School, Newport built an early 22-11 lead and made it stand up for a 70-62 win.
On Friday, the Bulldogs simply had no answers for Freeman (5-5, 3-1) on either side of the ball in a lopsided 77-39 loss.
In the loss to Newport (6-6, 2-3), defense tended to take a holiday, as the Grizzlies put up 22 first quarter points.

Kettle falls to Newport, Freeman

Riverside, L-side up next for KF

It was a rough week for Kettle Falls High (6-5, 1-3) in Northeast A League girl’s basketball.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind 17-5 after the first quarter back on Jan. 7 against Newport. It didn’t get much better the rest of the way and KFHS dropped a 60-39 decision to the visiting Grizzlies.
Newport, like they have done all winter long, relied on two principal scoring threats—Holly Malsbury (29 points) and Jolie Frederick (16).
The hard-working Malsbury was 12 of 14 from the free throw line. As a team, Newport was 22 of 28 at the charity stripe.

Defense keys Colville wins over Medical Lake, Chewelah

December 26, 2013

Priest River, T-lake this weekend

Defense was the name of the game in Colville’s two non-league girl’s basketball road wins last week.
In a 46-25 shellacking of host Medical Lake back on Dec. 18, the Indians’ defensive pressure exacted a toll.
It was much the same last Saturday at Chewelah, where CHS rolled to a 32-10 halftime lead en route to a 50-21 win over the Cougars.

Chewelah heads to Reardan Holiday tournament on weekend

December 26, 2013

The Jenkins High boy’s basketball team fell to 2-5 on the season after going 1-2 in three games last week.
The Cougars began their week well with a 68-47 win over Kettle Falls at home, but Chewelah was overpowered in their next two games--a 68-46 loss at Riverside and an 81-50 home loss last Saturday night in the 395 Showdown to Colville.
Chewelah head coach Jason Norman knew there were going to be some growing pains with his mostly inexperienced varsity roster. But Norman certainly see’s signs of improvement.

Tough week for Northport

December 26, 2013

The Northport High girl’s basketball team experienced a rough week in a season that was expected to have its share of up and down moments.
The Mustangs opened their week with a 56-24 loss to Inchelium before traveling to the Wellpinit Christmas Tournament and losing to host Wellpinit on Friday, 67-1. On Saturday, NHS lost a rematch with Inchelium, 83-20.
NHS head coach Erik Stark says that Northport is working hard and despite the lopsided losses, the girls are not giving up on the young season.

Cusick can’t sustain fast start

Neah Bay runs
past Panthers

The Cusick Panthers’ (8-3, 5-2) season came to an end on a frigid Friday night at Silverdale against the Neah Bay Red Devils (10-0, 5-0), 80-28.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but a bad couple of minutes early in the second quarter started a Neah Bay rally that didn’t stop until the Red Devils had run into the B-8 semifinals.
Cusick head coach Sonny Finley knew his Panthers had run up against a buzz saw and an eight-man powerhouse.

Lee, Carpenter blow through 2A District cross-country

November 7, 2013

State Saturday
in Pasco

With rain and 50 mile per hour wind punishing the open expanse of Spokane Valley’s Plantes Ferry Park last Saturday, Colville cross country standouts Megan Lee and Kevin Carpenter took the opportunity to punch their tickets to the Washington’s State Championship. While it was expected that Carpenter, a senior, would make his fourth and final trip to Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Club, it was Lee who shocked the field, running a personal course record on her way to an eye-opening third place finish.
