Putting the “try” in Triathlon: Run, hamster, run!

October 5, 2011

I hate treadmills. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Perhaps hate is too strong an utterance for a machine that is basically the bastard offspring of a conveyor belt and hamster wheel, so let me rephrase that. If treadmills were the symbolic piñata of all my prejudices and distaste for physical fitness, I would hang it from a tree branch and beat the ever-loving stuffing out of it.

Chewelah hopes to get back on winning track

October 5, 2011

The Chewelah Cougars volleyball team is entering a tough stretch of games and looking to find consistency in the midst of a five-match losing streak. Last week, the Cougars dropped three hard-fought matches against Newport, Kettle Falls and Riverside, while struggling on offense, defense and serving at various times in the past week.
“We matched up well, but we broke down defensively quite a bit,” coach Wendy Stenbeck said. “The other teams didn’t...they out hustled us.”

League-leading Freeman too much for Chewelah

October 5, 2011

The Chewelah Cougars (1-4, 0-2) faced off against the Freeman Scotties (5-0, 2-0) on Friday night in Chewelah in a key Northeast A League football game. The Cougars held their own for most of the first half, but two late touchdowns by league-leading Freeman in the first half opened up the game and the Scotties never looked back, cruising to a 41-12 victory on Senior Night for Chewelah.
For the second straight week, the big play was the nemesis of the Cougar defense--a touchdown pass of 56 yards and two other touchdowns set up by plays of 40-plus yards in the first half.

DM Pro is top merchandiser

September 28, 2011

Dominion Meadows Golf Professional Andy Hite has been named the top merchandiser (public course category) in the Inland Empire PGA section. Hite, an Inland Empire PGA member since 1992, is in his 12th season as PGA professional in Colville and at Dominion Meadows. The honor is accorded annually by a vote of Inland Empire PGA professionals. Hite says he thoroughly enjoys the retail sales aspect of the golf business. His Just Rip It pro shop at Dominion Meadows is annually one of the best stocked anywhere in the region. “I enjoy it,” Hite says as he regrips clubs for a DM golfer.

The roll continues for Colville volleyball

September 28, 2011

Two teams expected to give Colville High a run for the Northeast A League volleyball title this fall are on the Indians’ schedule this week. CHS, with NEA wins over Newport and Riverside last week to get the league season underway, will host Lakeside High on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) and travel to Freeman on Thursday (6:30 p.m.) in key NEA battles. Colville will travel to Chewelah next Tuesday (6:30 p.m. start). Colville is the favorite to win a second straight NEA championship this fall.

Bulldogs win in overtime

September 28, 2011

Despite managing only 98 yards of total offense, Kettle Falls High found a way to pull out a come-from-behind 13-12 Northeast 2B football win over visiting Davenport last Friday night.
In front of a big Homecoming crowd, the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1) spotted the Gorillas (1-3, 0-2) an overtime touchdown before getting a two-yard run from Austin Anderson and the game-winning Kyle Dodson PAT kick.

Northport dominates

September 22, 2011

In the surprise of the Northeast 1B eight-man football season to date, upstart Northport High (2-1, 1-0) blasted visiting Columbia-Inchelium 41-16 last Friday night in front of a big home crowd.
This Northeast 1B North match-up was all Northport.
The Mustangs scored the game’s first four touchdowns and led 27-0 before Columbia-Inchelium was able to get on the board.
Tailback David Higgins rushed for 144 tough yards on 18 carries for NHS. He scored on runs of four, 25 and 15 yards and kicked three points after touchdown.

Husband & wife aces

September 22, 2011

Rare is the hole in one. A feat even more eye-popping is a husband and wife recording holes in one a week apart—on the same hole. But that’s what Sarah and Bob Cleaver (pictured) did earlier this month on the par 3 16th hole at Dominion Meadows Golf Course. Bob, playing with Sarah at the time, aced the 142-yard 16th hole on Sept. 8. Cleaver’s nine-iron hit just right of the pin and spun into the cup. The city of Colville Building Inspector, who has holes in one on the second and ninth holes at DM, said his latest ace from the elevated tee on no.

Colville boys second at Farragut

September 22, 2011

On Saturday, Colville High’s cross-country team took their show on the road to the venerable Farragut - Super One Foods Invitational. The challenging 5k course, located along the banks of Idlewilde Bay on Lake Pend Oreille, provided the local harriers with their first chance of the season to test themselves in race conditions.

Colville comeback falls short

September 22, 2011

For the first time in three games, the Colville High offense came to play last Friday at Newport in the Northeast A League opener for both football teams.
It has been a frustrating early-season for the Indians (0-3, 0-1) so far. Coming into the Newport game, CHS hadn’t scored a touchdown from scrimmage.
But that all changed at Newport--the Indians roared back from a 27-7 deficit to nearly pull out a much-needed win.
But Newport (3-0, 1-0) held on to record a 33-28 win.
