Annual DIabetes Walk in Kettle Falls is Sunday

September 23, 2013

Participants walk down Meyers Street in Kettle Falls during last year's walk-a-thon.

The second annual Juvenile Diabetes Walk is ready for a re¬peat of last year, except bigger and better. The event, which takes place adjacent to the Kettle Falls Swimming Pool, raises money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (J DRF). The walk will be held Sunday, Sept. 29 with check-in at noon and the walk starting at 1 p.m.
“Last year was awesome,” praises event chair Amy Miller. “I was thrilled at how the community turned out for the event. We had people of all ages, families, singles, old, young—it was great to see how much people care.”
According to Miller, there were 222 registered walkers, but around 250 people ended up participating. At the end of the day, the group had raised $5,300.
For more than 40 years, JDRF has been a leader in the search for an end to type 1 diabetes, through both research funding and advocacy. The organization also goes beyond research and support of teens battling the disease. Today, 85 percent of those with type 1 diabetes in the U.S are adults. Nearly 1 in 4 U.S. teens is on the fast track to diabetes, if they don’t already have the disease, according to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that was published 2012 in Pediatrics.
This year, the Juvenile Diabetes Walk hopes people will respond to the motto of “Hope, Faith, Cure” and help raise $7,000.
