Big week for CHS wrestlers

January 25, 2012

League dual title on the line

There is nothing like saving the best for last.
Colville High faces its biggest test(s) of the Northeast A League dual season this week when they travel to Lakeside and Riverside for match-ups with the Eagles and Rams.
Colville, who shared the NEA dual meet championship with Lakeside and Riverside last season, would like nothing better than to win the title outright this time around.
Colville travels to Nine Mile Falls and Lakeside High on Thursday (6 p.m. start). The Indians will turn around and head to Riverside on Friday (6 p.m.).
Meanwhile, Lakeside and Riverside, scheduled to wrestle last week, were postponed because of weather-related issues. The Eagles and Rams will square off on Tuesday.
“It’s pretty much set up for each match to become a league championship match,” said CHS head coach Randy Cloke. “We hope to win it outright this year. No more sharing.”
Cloke says he likes his team’s match-ups with Lakeside and Riverside this time around, although giving up 12 points in forfeits doesn’t help Colville’s cause any.
There will be some key match-ups this week for the Indians. At Lakeside, Ben Knight and his LHS opponent are both unbeaten in league at 113 pounds.
“This is a key, must win weight for us,” Cloke said, adding that “we have to win one of the two at 152 or 160.
“The simple story is that we need to pin and stay off our backs.”
In both match-ups, the Indians will have to take advantage of their strength in the lower weights.
“At Riverside, we have to win down low with big pins to counter their upper weights (strength).”
Riverside’s Kit Major at 138 pounds is a load, but Cloke is confident that his opponent on Friday, Trenton Welton, can make it a battle.
“Trenton will have to be a minimalist and not give up six,” Cloke said. “Again, it’s pin and not get pinned.”
Colville was at Freeman last Thursday against the host Scotties and Newport.
Colville downed Freeman, 54-24.
Freeman beat Newport 48-17 and the Scotties downed Chewelah, 48-25.
The Northeast A District 7 Tournament will be held at Freeman High School on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Colville will host the Region 1V 1A Tournament on Feb. 11.
