Authorities have recovered the body of Susan Yager, 51, a Tacoma woman who is thought to have drowned in Loon Lake over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Yager was staying at a cabin on the lake and witnesses reported seeing her in a canoe before her disappearance. Family members and co-workers became concerned when she did not return home, and contacted law enforcement for a welfare check.
According to Stevens County Sheriff Kendle Allen, a family who owns a cabin on the lake was preparing to take their annual holiday photograph near the lake’s northeast shore last Sunday, when they discovered a body frozen in the ice. Stevens County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters from Stevens County Fire District #1 removed Yager’s body from the ice before it was taken to the Stevens County Coroner’s Office.
Though not yet official, Allen said he thinks Yager either died of drowning, or hypothermia because of the water’s freezing temperature.
Stevens County Sheriff Marine Deputies and Dive Team members searched the lake to locate Yager after her disappearance was reported, but were unsuccessful.
Allen says Yager was not wearing a life jacket. Her body was discovered about 500 yards from where her canoe was recovered.
