Tyler Vining top seed to sub-regional
Kettle Falls High wrestled at Republic High School in the Bulldogsâ final all-school match-up of the season last Saturday. The meet also served as seeding to the 2B sub-regional meet on Saturday at Lake Roosevelt High School.
Regional competition will be held at Kittitas High School Feb. 10-11.
The girlâs sub-regional, where Kettleâs Lindsey Olvera will be slotted at 106 pounds, will be held at East Valley High School in Spokane on Saturday. The girlâs sub-regional includes Class B through 4A.
REPUBLIC RECAP
KHFS head coach Joe Kerns said he was appreciative of the format at the last all-league match-up of the season.
âThe league had agreed to have group settings so that each wrestler would have an opportunity to compete at weight during the regular seasonâŠso that seeding to the sub-regional could occur,â he explained.
The plan was also an opportunity to reduce travel expenses.
âIt was good to see all the schools working together in this way,â Kerns said, adding that âthe wrestling schools really try to help each other when they can. We appreciate the win-win situation that comes out of working together.â
Kerns said he is proud of his small group of wrestlersâon and off the mat.
âOur wrestlers have worked hard and have monitored their diets and maintained their grades,â Kerns said. âWe donât have as many people out as some teams do, so our kids wrestle where they are and typically take on all comers. We did see some teams moving people around in last moment preparations for State, so we had to wrestle a few extra matches.â
AT A GLANCE
106 poundsâKettleâs Garrett Anderson lost by decision to his ranked opponent from Kittitas. He then âhad a bad throw,â according to his coach and ended up getting pinned by his opponent from Lake Roosevelt.
Also at 106, Olvera âhad an opportunity to shine in competition against female wrestlers,â Kerns said. Olvera pinned her opponent from Mary Walker High School (Springdale) and won by decision against her Lake Roosevelt opponent last Saturday.
132âKyle Hyde lost match-ups to his opponents from Lake Roosevelt and Kittitas, âbut had some good action at 132,â Kerns noted.
Jacob Walsh lost by decision to his Oroville opponent and pinned an opponent from Kittitas. He lost to a Republic wrestler.
At 152 pounds, Dan Kearney lost matches to Kittitas and Brewster wrestlers before pinning his opponent from Lake Roosevelt in a very competitive weight class.
Kerns said that Austin Anderson is coming off an injury âand got caught with his arm out of position on a shotâ and ended up losing to his Liberty Bell opponent last Saturday at Republic.
âBut Austin came right back with a win via pin over his opponent from Northwest Christian,â Kerns said. Anderson later dropped a decision to his Lake Roosevelt opponent.
Kettle Falls High 195-pound standout Tyler Vining went unopposed at Republic and heads to the Lake Roosevelt sub-regional as top seed.
âNobody felt the need or inclination to see how they would do against him (at Republic),â Kerns added.
Vining is unbeaten in league.
