Chewelahâs baseball team finally got to spend some time on the diamond this past week, playing five games since last Monday. So it goes when the early spring has been uncommonly wet and inclement.
Jenkins High School head coach Luke Jeanneret isnât too worried about all the games in a short, quick stretch. Jeanneret figures his pitching is deep enough and able to take the wear and tear so many games can put on a staff.
âOur pitching held up pretty good on Saturday,â he said of the doubleheader split with Colville. âWe left a lot of balls out over the middle of the plate and that cost us, but other than that, itâs been a good week for them.â
The warmer, drier weather has helped the Cougars offense as well. After only scoring ten runs in the first three games, Chewelah broke out the bats in the doubleheader in Colville, scoring a combined 16 runs in the split.
âRuns were at a premium until Saturday,â said Jeanneret. âWe started to knock the heck out of the ball once the sun came out.â
The Cougars opened their week with a pair of one-run victories against Lakeside and Riverside. Cody Sweat picked up the complete game win against Lakeside, while against Riverside, Caleb Wiebe pitched the first seven innings, but Calvin Connall got the victory in the 10th inning after three solid innings of relief.
Two more one run ballgames came Saturday in Colville. The Cougars took the first game 6-5 on the back of another seven inning effort by Wiebe.
âHe might have punched me in the face had I tried to take him (Wiebe) out.â said Jeanneret. âThat kidâs a competitor.â
In the second game, the offenses continued to roll, totaling 21 runs on 16 hits. Late rallies by both teams made for an exciting finish in Colvilleâs 11-10 victory and a doubleheader split.
On Monday the Cougars traveled to Lakeside and didnât appear to have much life left in their legs. Joey Baker took the loss in an 11-1 defeat to the Eagles.
On Tuesday, the Cougars will try to turn it around when Newport visits.
On Saturday, the Freeman Scotties pay a visit to Chewelah for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. and then on Tuesday, April 17, the Cougars travel back to Lakeside for a single game at 4:30 p.m.
