Chewelah hopes to get back on winning track

The Chewelah Cougars volleyball team is entering a tough stretch of games and looking to find consistency in the midst of a five-match losing streak. Last week, the Cougars dropped three hard-fought matches against Newport, Kettle Falls and Riverside, while struggling on offense, defense and serving at various times in the past week.
“We matched up well, but we broke down defensively quite a bit,” coach Wendy Stenbeck said. “The other teams didn’t...they out hustled us.”
“Offensively, we were pretty decent; we just weren’t picking up as many of their balls as they were ours,” she added. The Cougars (4-5, 0-4) lost in four games at home to Newport (2-6, 1-3) to start their week.
Stenbeck said that “as far as unforced errors go, that was the worst match we’ve had all season. We've never had so many errors in each category.
“Newport was solid, but we gave away way too many points.”
Mid-week, the Cougars traveled to Kettle Falls and lost in five games and again the unforced errors helped undo the Chewelah effort.
“We were pretty closely matched, but defensively we just weren’t clicking, getting our assignments done and getting to the balls we needed to,” said Stenbeck. “We lost a lot of points off of just tips, same as at Riverside. We're making a big effort to change that this last stretch.”
The Cougars also lost in four close games in Riverside on Thursday night to finish their week.
“We’re competing hard,” said Stenbeck, “but we need to work under pressure a little better. When they do put it together, they do a really good job. There’s a lot of potential, we just have to be more consistent.”
THIS WEEK
The Cougars face a three strong opponents this week. On Tuesday the Colville Indians (8-0, 4-0) visited Jenkins High School, followed on Thursday by Freeman (7-1, 3-1) visiting JHS.
On Tuesday, Oct.11, Chewelah travels to Lakeside (5-2, 3-1). All matches begin at 6:30.
