Chewelah runs Farragut

September 22, 2011

Chewelah's cross-country team ran its second meet of the season last Saturday at Farragut State Park along the shores of Pend Oreille Lake in north Idaho.
The young squad ran short-handed, but made improvements on individual times and impressed coach Pat Kostecka with their hard work. The meet wasn’t originally on the Cougars' schedule, so the team missed several runners to prior commitments
“It’s amazing how many things kids get involved in these days,” Kosstecka said of the prior commitments several of his squad members had on Saturday. “We didn't have many run this week.”
On Saturday at Farragut, the Cougars' squad consisted of 15 runners, 14 of them freshmen. The Cougar boys ran the junior varsity race so the entire team could run in the same race. Caleb Montgomery posted the fastest time for the boys, clocking in at 21:56.
The Chewelah girls ran the varsity race, with Darby Dopenberg leading the Cougars with a time of 27:25.
The Farragut course is tougher than the Silverwood course Chewelah ran on down the road the previous week. Farragut is anything but flat and the layout includes the infamous Goat Hill climb toward the end of the race.
“I have found that kids are generally going to be about a minute slower than Silverwood, but we did have some kids actually improve on their times,” Kostecka said.
Walker Mudgett was one of those runners, hitting the finish line at Farragut in 22:47, some 30 seconds faster than his previous week's run.
The Cougars are not running this week, but they do plan on some training and team building a Waitts Lake this week.
“We’re going to run around the lake and then have some fun out there,“ Kostecka said.
Chewelah will run in the Can-Am Invitational along the shores of Lake Roosevelt on Oct. 1. and look forward to the upcoming league schedule.
