CHS ‘Midnight Mile’ draws good turnout

August 27, 2013

Colville’s freshman crew, led by TJ Baun and Palmer Moorehouse, run the traditional Midnight Mile.

season underway

Let the wind blow and the thunder roll. Sunday evening’s squall through the Colville Valley managed to knock out power and do a fair amount of property damage, but wasn’t able to dampen the Colville High School cross country team’s appointed 2013 season kick-off.
While much of the Valley languished in the dark after a strong thunderstorm knocked out large portions of the local power grid, a swift response by local AVISTA crews had the metered gold restored to CHS well before the Indians’ annual midnight appointment with their new season.
With the flip of a couple of switches, CHS coach Dean Fischer lit the CHS track and field complex for the tenth consecutive running of the Midnight Mile.
“It was a good turn-out, especially considering the weather,” Fischer said of the midnight run into a new cross country season. “We had a lot of new faces. Our freshman turnout was better than I had anticipated. Now the work begins.”
The Indians regular practice sessions began on Monday. The team will hold two practices per day until school begins on Sept. 4. Morning practices will be held at CHS at 8 a.m. Evening practices will be at 6 p.m. at Yep Kanuum (Colville City) Park.
Colville is in the second year of a two-year cycle in the Class 2A Great Northern League.
“The way our schedule is unfolding, it looks like we will only have a couple of weeks to get ready to compete,” Fischer said. “Luckily, we have a core group with a pretty good summer base. I think this will be a team that will take some time to find its stride, but will improve each week. We will be competitive early, and potentially a force as we run through the season.”
Colville will open the season at the Highlander Invitational (Shadle Park High School) on Saturday, Sept. 14. The first home meet will be Oct. 2 when Clarkston and East Valley visit.
