Colville boys, girls get past Lakeside

In high school basketball action Tuesday night in the Northeast A League, the Colville High girls remained one game behind unbeaten Freeman after recording a 45-42 road win at Lakeside (10-8, 5-3).
The teams battled on mostly even terms until Colville regained the lead for good in the game’s final four-minutes. Senior post Ashley Knight made two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Indians their final lead. A desperation three-point attempt by Lakeside was off the mark and Colville (13-5, 7-1) had escaped.
Tasha Luu led Colville with 14 points. Erin Little added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Elsewhere around the NEA, top-ranked Freeman (18-0, 8-0) won its 41st straight game with a 62-29 dismantling of Riverside (6-12, 1-7) at Rockford.
Alyssa Maine led Freeman with 15 points.
Newport (12-6, 3-5) got off to a fast start and overwhelmed Chewelah (2-16, 0-8) 58-35 in Pend Oreille County on Tuesday night.
Taylor Lewis led a balanced NHS attack with 14 points.
Colville will host two-time defending state champion Freeman on Friday night. An upset would thrust Colville into a tie for first place with the Scotties. Game time is 5:45 p.m.
Colville will close out the regular season Saturday when Chewelah visits.
In boy’s action, the three-way tie for first between Freeman, Colville and Chewelah was broken up when Newport (10-8, 4-4) upset Chewelah, 57-52 behind Jake Wiley’s 24 points.
Chewelah fell to 13-5, 5-3.
Chewelah was led in scoring by Derek Smith and Caleb Wiebe with 12 points apiece.
Newport won the game in the fourth quarter with a 21-11 run.
Colville (11-7, 6-2) remained in a first place tie with Freeman after digging out a 55-45 win at Nine Mile Falls against Lakeside (8-10, 3-5).
Matt Hubbard led Colville with 19 points and 14 rebounds. J.R. Henry added 17 more for the Indians, who will host Freeman on Friday night in a battle for first place in the NEA.
Colville will close out the regular season on Saturday night when they entertain Chewelah.
Game time Friday night is 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s game will start at about 6 p.m.
Freeman kept pace atop the NEA boy’s standings by blowing open a competitive game in the third quarter against Riverside with a 24-9 run on the way to a 70-47 win at home.
Derek Harter led Freeman with 24 points.
