Fifty-six varsity girls toed the line last Thursday for the culminating meet of the NEA League Cross Country Championship. The favorites going into the meet were Lakeside, Deer Park and Colville.

Deer Park placed second in the 2016 State Championships, but lost two senior varsity runners in 2017. Their star runner, Libby Michael, has been injured for most of this season. The Lakeside girls (2013 & 2014 State champions) did not make a state appearance in 2016, but have since filled their ranks with two strong freshman runners.

Colville placed sixth at State in 2016, lost only one senior to graduation and has filled varsity spots with freshman Emily Montgomery and junior Kassi Brooks. Everyone expected an exciting and very close race, according to Colville cross-country head coach Dean Fischer.
