Colville High volleyball up for Youth awards

January 4, 2012

Missy Bennett, CHS v-ball team also honored

Twenty standout high school athletes, including Colville High School junior volleyball player Joellee Buckner, have been recognized for their accomplishments in 2011 and will be honored during the annual Inland Northwest Youth Awards Luncheon Feb. 15 at the Spokane Convention Center.
The luncheon is hosted by the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters, whose 50 members in eastern Washington and north Idaho pick finalists and vote for the winners of junior male and female athlete, coaches and teams of the year.
They will also honor three people with long associations to youth sports with 25-year awards.
Co-hosting the popular event will be the Spokane Regional Sports Commission.
This year’s Master of Ceremonies will be KHQ’s Sam Adams and Ed Sharman.
Among the junior awards’ finalists are Buckner, who helped lead Colville High to its first-ever State 1A volleyball championship back in November. Buckner was the Northeast A League MVP and State 1A MVP.
Among the finalists for Girl’s Coach of the Year honors is Buckner’s coach, Missy Bennett.
Bennett’s CHS volleyball team is up for Female Team of the Year honors. The Indians finished the season 34-1 and never lost a match to Class 1A competition during a season to remember. Colville won the NEA and district championship, along with the regional title on the way to annexing the title in Yakima.
