Colville Relay For Life seeks volunteers

Relay For Life events, sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), raise funds that support cancer research, free programs and services for cancer patients and their caregivers and early detection and prevention programs.

The program most used by Stevens County is the lodging program. Hotel partners donate room nights to ACS for cancer patients who have to travel away from home for treatment, lessening the financial impact of completing treatment.

There isn’t a distance or income requirement to be eligible for this program. Patients traveling to Spokane can request a room and avoid driving back and forth daily. Through Sept. 30, 2016, patients from Stevens County received 102 nights of lodging through the ACS this year, saving more than $15,000.

“We depend on the passion of volunteers to complete our mission,” said Whitney Jones, RFL community manager. “People with a variety of talents and time commitments will come together in the greater Colville area to keep Relay For Life alive.”

According to Jones, the local RFL needs recruiters, marketers, organizers, entertainers and planners.

The community is invited to attend the first committee meeting to learn more about volunteering with Relay For Life on Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at Providence Mount Carmel Hospital.
