New coach & some veteran senior talent
There is some serious understatement in play to say that there are a few notable changes in the Colville High School volleyball program this fall.
For one thing, Missy Bennett, who spent 27 years coaching and is a member of the Washington Coaches’ Hall of Fame, is no longer on the sidelines. Bennett is still teaching at CHS, but athletic director Kelly Carr recently hired veteran Kennewick School District coach Ron Schuh to replace one of the Colville School District’s coaching icons (see related story).
For another, the Indians lost four key contributors to a 2012 team that finished 32-3, won a Great Northern League championship, captured a District 7 title (the 2012 team didn’t lose a game in league play, much less a match) and finished fourth at the State 2A Tournament at Pierce College in Lakewood.
Among those four seniors was arguably the best player to ever play volleyball at Colville, Joellee Buckner, and four-year starting setter, Leanna Carr.
If there is a question mark with this year’s team, it’s how good will the setting be. Carr was simply one of the best to ever play that position at CHS.
Still, the Indians are not without considerable returning firepower. It’s a veteran cast Schuh and assistant coach Anne Cecil work with—there are seven seniors.
