Coming to the aid of the addicted

June 7, 2011

Cindy Kalisch and Scott Batten of Community Under Power (CUP) work to empower men who are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Kalisch began CUP with her husband, Kraig. Batten is one of the program's graduates. Photo by Cassie Anderson, S-E Intern.

In August of 2008, Scott Batten, sick and emaciated, was homeless on the streets of Spokane. Batten was a veteran, an alcoholic in the last stages, and in need of help.
Batten had abused alcohol since the age of 10; he was addicted to alcohol for over 40 years. If he tried to detox, he would experience severe withdrawals lasting over nine days.
Batten had sought help by contacting several organizations that helped drug addicts, but they were all at full capacity. He was on the street without people to care for him. Cindy Kalisch of Chewelah heard about him from The Lord’s Ranch, an organization he had contacted.
“Cindy talked to me for five minutes on the phone and came down and picked me up,” Batten said.
Kalisch took Batten to her home where she was housing other men suffering from drug addictions. Kraig and Cindy Kalisch have established a halfway house in Chewelah called the CUP (Community Under Power) that teaches men ravaged by drugs to conquer their addictions and live healthy lives. The CUP functions like a school, teaching its students how to become contributing members of society instead of teaching them scholastics. All the students of the CUP live with the Kalischs at their two- story Victorian style home in Chewelah.
