The Chewelah Cougars girlâs basketball team split their games this week. Jenkins High looked good in a game against a somewhat depleted Deer Park program, while being pushed around some by a bigger, taller Northwest Christian team.
Overall, however, Chewelah head coach Tom Skok is pleased with his team so far and is looking forward to the rest of the season.
âIâm feeling pretty good about where weâre at,â Skok said. âIt was good for us to start with a couple of wins, but it was also good for us to have good competition like we did against Northwest Christian. If we hit a few more of those six to eight-footers that we missed, we would have made that game a little more interesting.â
The Cougars are playing well right now and much of that is because of the defensive pressure they are putting on the ball.
âWe have good athleticism in our lineup and from our players off the bench,â said coach Skok. âOur goal is to put pressure on the ball and make the other team find someone else other than the point guard to make the decisions on the floor.â
Last Tuesday, the Deer Park Stags visited Chewelah and while the 44-24 score may have been easily in the Cougarsâ favor, the Cougars worked hard the entire night.
âIn the first quarter, we didnât press much because of some early foul trouble by Sydnie Katzer and Ryann Richmond; that let Deer Park hang around,â Skok said.
âIn the second and third quarters, we didnât stop the pressureâŠanytime the ball would go out of bounds or anything, we would make sure to have some type of press on them.â
Chewelah was able to take advantage of the problems they caused for Deer Park, holding the Stags to eight points while scoring 31 of their own.
Brittney Wuesthoff had 14 points, while Ryann Richmond added 10 for Chewelah.
Saturdayâs game with a solid NWC club was a different test entirely, with the Panorama League 2B power rolling over Chewelah, 49-25.
While the game against the Crusaders (4-0) was lopsided, the Cougars put out a much better effort against NWC than they did last season.
Coach Skok said that âNWC was a good game for us, because we played a lot better this year than we did last year.â
Chewelah (2-1) was led in scoring by Amanda Pugh, who had seven points for the Cougars.
The Crusaders were led by Chanel Knight and Hannah Dietzen, who both scored 11 for NWC.
The Northeast A League regular season kicks off on Friday for Chewelah with a trip to Kettle Falls to face the Lady Bulldogs (3-2).
âWhen I saw that Kettle Falls had scored 76 and 66 points their last couple of games, I figured that we better run our tails off and play defense for the entire 32 minutes,â said Coach Skok of KFHS, who downed Tonasket 66-24 at home last Saturday afternoon.
Skok thinks his team is ready for what should be an unpredictable NEA season.
âItâs a tough league,â he conceded. âYou have to play hard because anyone is capable of winning any game.â
Fridayâs game against Kettle Falls tips off at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Cougars travel to Colville and will face off against the Indians at 5:15 p.m. in a non-league 395 Showdown with the Indians (0-3) of Ray Clark.
Colville has played a tough non-league schedule to date. The Indians opened with a lopsided loss at two-time defending State 2B champion Reardan before losing narrowly at Sandpoint. CHS fell to defending 1A champion Okanogan last Saturday afternoon at home.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, Chewelah is once again at home, this time against the Riverside Rams in another NEA contest. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
