Daniel Robert Blackman, beloved husband, son, father, uncle, and friend, was called home to be with Jesus on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at the age of 59. Born in Wessington Springs, South Dakota on December 1, 1951, Dan lived a full and vivid life. While his parents may not have known it at the time, Robert and Levonne (Gillette) Blackman, surely couldn’t have expected the significant impact Dan would have on the lives of all with whom he came in contact.Dan spent his early childhood in the Midwest. He moved to Kettle Falls in 1964 and graduated from Kettle Falls High School in 1970. Dan also met his future wife, Claudia, at this time, and they married on April 10, 1971 at the Colville Free Methodist Church, which would later become their church home.Dan’s family became a little bigger on Dec. 17, 1977 when his daughter, Nika, was born. Dan, Claudia and Nika shared many adventures together, often traveling to exotic locations to SCUBA dive and explore. Nika, along with her husband Brian, currently live in Spokane.A prominent community businessman, Dan, along with Claudia, opened, owned and operated Valley Title Guarantee from 1980 to 2005. In addition to his business contributions to the community, Dan was also committed to volunteer service in Colville. Dan was a long-time member of the Colville Rotary Club, a volunteer Search and Rescue SCUBA diver with the Tri-County Divers, a frequent volunteer at City Gate Spokane, and helped with the construction of the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Colville. Dan also often took it upon himself to serve outside of organizations as well. He enjoyed his yearly role as Santa for local families and could always be counted on to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed, frequently arriving first and leaving last, making sure the work was done. His service was not limited to Washington or even the United States. When asked, Dan would state that the highlight of his various service activities was his most recent adventure of traveling, along with Claudia and Nika, to Beira, Mozambique to spend time serving the Lord at the House of Blessing Orphanage.Dan’s life was radically changed on May 26, 1997. Surrounded by his wife and daughter, and led by Pastor Dick Dickinson, Dan accepted the gift of Christ’s salvation, grace and forgiveness into his life. He would go on to be baptized by Pastor Greg Knox on Sept. 23, 2001. Dan’s relationship with Jesus would forever impact his life, and it allowed him to face his extended illness with great courage, hope and strength. In addition to Claudia, Nika, and Levonne, Dan is survived by his brothers, Mike and Tim Blackman; his sisters, Sherry Fox, Patty Chester and Gloria Peterson; his in-laws, Jan and Barb Blackman, Dale Fox, Dan Chester, and Fred Peterson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Blackman.A memorial service, celebrating Dan’s life will be held at the Grace Evangelical Free Church at 851 S. Miner St. in Colville on Saturday, November 19 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be officiated by Dan’s longtime pastor and friend, Pastor Dick Dickinson.
